Directed and written by Ishana. A runtime of one hour and forty-two minutes. With a PG-13 rating. Based on the Novel of the same name by A. M. Shine.
Set in Europe, "Mina," played by Dakota Fanning, has a lot of internal issues going on. She was in a bad accident when she was a little girl that has affected her whole life ever since.
"Mina"is an artist, but she currently works at a pet store. Her boss sends her to deliver a parrot. En route to this location in western Ireland, her car breaks down, finding her trapped. Walking around this lustrous green with these sky-scrapper-like trees. "Mina" is looking for help.
She finds a random woman named "Madeline," played by Olwen Fouéré, who lures her to a shelter. Also in this shelter are a woman named "Ciara," played by Georgina Campbell, and a younger gentleman named "Daniel," played by Oliver Finnegan.
Not sure what's going on, "Mina" quickly finds out she's not in any normal forest, and this isn't your normal shelter. These people are being held captive by ancient creatures. On top of the already weird nature of everything, you have to follow specific rules, or these creatures will get upset. One rule is to stand still and let them watch you when the sun goes down.
Not trying to stick around for the madness, "Mina" will try and get out of this weird predicament. But she'll find out that it's not as easy as she thinks, even though she might not take it seriously. There are consequences for breaking the rules. In this weird horror film.
"The Watchers" was just what I expected. I've been burned multiple times watching M. Night Shyamalan films. This time around, it was his daughter who wrote and directed it. It was her debut film. M. Night was the producer of the film.
Ishana doesn't fall far from the tree. Her father and she both have the same twisted and weird brain. They both make weird films that only piss you off. I haven't gotten joy from his films in a while. So much so, I said I was done watching his films. I knew Ishana would be more of the same, but I decided to give her a shot, nonetheless.
As a father, especially on Father's Day, I do think it's cool that his daughter is following in his footsteps and getting the opportunity to even make films. But I'm one and done, and I'm good at seeing future films from her, respectfully.
Ishana has her style, but this film was pointless, and it wasn't scary at all. There were so many times throughout the film that I just thought, huh, and why? It's a full-on nostalgia film because I'm still not fully processing Dakota Fanning being an adult.
Another weird film that fits right in the Shyamalan household. I give this film one mor fire🔥.
