Chronicle (2012)
Too obvious from the start
Didn't read a lot about this movie before I watched it and hadn't even fully watched a trailer. But, I thought I would give it a go and see what I thought of it. I normally enjoy the "found footage" kind of films, with Cloverfield and Troll hunter being 2 films in the genre I have really enjoyed. Unfortunately this one does not add to that list. For a start off there is no need for the found footage theme. It is just a little gimmick they use but was not needed for the whole film, would have been better if it had been split more 50/50 between that and normal footage.
The whole storyline of the film is too obvious, within 10mins of the films starting I had already guessed what would happen and told my wife what I thought the outcome would be. After the end of the movie, it was nice to know I was right yet again. The acting was OK but nothing special. Effects again where fine, but only of the level we have come to expect from most modern movies. The first half of the movie is a little slow but also probably the best. The longer it goes on the more obvious and generic it starts to feel.
Such a shame, it had the potential to be so much better but an obvious storyline, average script and acting and an off kilter pace (either to slow or too fast depending on the part of the movie) spoiled it.
Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (2010)
Why all the bad reviews?
So just watched this movie and I have to say I don't understand all the negative reviews about it. Maybe that's because I am a former fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and in all it's essence, this film is just like that TV series. Cheesy, camp, over the top and just fun. That's all it is, fun. It's not scary but was it ever meant to be? I don't think so. Every scene seems to have been made with a touch of humour. What else could I say about it? OK, so maybe this is what Blade would have been if he had been a metrosexual. Just put it on and have a good time. There is nothing that will make you say WOW, but do we always have to watch movies that are deep, clever and meaningful? No, sometimes it's good to just watch a fun movie. Acting, well if over the top is a style, then that is what they where doing here. Action scenes where OK, but nothing more than you would get in the aforementioned Buffy. FX??? Makeup was cool on some of the monsters but again, nothing spectacular. I've given it a 6/10 and for me that's not bad. Sit back, chill out, enjoy and everyone stop being so serious.
Immortel (ad vitam) (2004)
Don't expect all the answers.
Read some decent things about this movie and thought I would give it a go. I am probably no more the wise for watching it as to be quite honest I was kind of left asking myself "what the hell was all that about?". Anyway, it doesn't matter. Just watch it for the decent enough attempt at making a sci fi movie which does not follow any of the old plots laid out by so many. That is one good thing about this film, it is definitely original. So original I didn't have a clue what was going on most of the time. The acting is OK, nothing special. The CGI is a bit hit and miss, sometimes it can look amazing and flawless, then you get some character who's face looks like it was made on an old ZX81. Would I watch it again? Nah, not worth it, once you have seen it that's enough really.
The Hunters (2011)
Decent, neither good nor bad
This film is totally average. The story bares very little to the description given by the films marketing department, I wonder if anyone there has actually watched it. It is not a horror movie at all. Instead it is a thriller, with a small amount of action. Definitely worthy of it's straight to video release, it is certainly not as bad (or good) as some folks are making out. The script is OK, the acting is OK (at best) but the place most of it is shot is genuinely creepy. Don't expect too much and you won't be let down. The characters themselves are actually the most interesting part of the movie and could have done with fleshing out a little more.
