Ra.One (2011)
Ra.One : 2011 Hindi science fiction superhero
Ra.One (Hindi: रा.वन; full: Random Access–Version 1.0) is a 2011 Hindi science fiction superhero film written and directed by Anubhav Sinha, and starring Shahrukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in the lead roles. It also stars Shahana Goswami, Dalip Tahil and Chinese-American actor Tom Wu in supporting roles, along with Rajinikanth, Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra making guest appearances. The film is jointly produced by Eros International and Khan's production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, and was originally scheduled to release on 3 June 2011. However, due to extensive post-production work involving special effects and the 3D conversion, its release was postponed, and had a worldwide opening during the Diwali weekend on 26 October 2011. Ra.One is currently India's most expensive film to date. The film released across a record 5,000 screens worldwide in 2D and around 600 screens in 3D,] along with its dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu and German.
Its gonna be a huge blockbuster all over the world and it's gonna change the level of Indian cinema. And those who are saying that it's a Hollywood copy, I would say it's better to take a little concept from Hollywood rather than making the exact copy of Telugu movies.
Story: Goofy gaming expert, Shekhar Subramaniam (Shah Rukh Khan) wants to be a super hero for his son Prateik (Armaan Verma). But his young son, like all young sons, thinks super villains are more cool. So Shekhar creates the ultimate clash of good against evil by pitting a very powerful anti-hero Ra-One against a seemingly less potent good guy. But can the good guys ever lose? Movie Review: Rajnikant's Robot may have dated it, but Ra-One does manage to hold despite the larger-than-life quality of Rajni's antics as Chitti. Here, Shah Rukh Khan does the train walk sideways and he does it rather well. And if that is not enough, the two Desi sci fiction heroes have a split second encounter on the streets of Mumbai, with Rajni Saar showing off his flying goggles act and SRK replicating it with élan. Twin Rascals! Ra-One works on several accounts. First because it has some interesting clashes between G-One, the good robot(Shah Rukh Khan) and Ra-One, the bad robot, who can take the form of anyone he wants. Secondly, the bond that G-One develops with the family he is supposed to protect, Kareena and her young son Prateik, is warm and winsome. There is also a lot of wit thrown in here and there in the screenplay, specially when the film concentrates on the geeky and loving Subramaniam's family dinners. And finally it is the excellently sung and choreographed Chammak-Challo number which keeps the mercury rising to unprecendented heights.
The film falls back in the emotional quotient. Understandably, robots have no feelings, but remember, even the steely Terminator managed to have a very special relationship with the mom and her messiah son. Also, considering so much money has been poured into the film, the special effects and the hi-tech gadgetry lacks the glitzy feel of Hollywood sci-fiction. In some places, it even gets somewhat tacky with all those flying cars hurtling into nowhere and the digital game screen going gaudy in orange.
Small quibbles, actually, since Ra-One is sure to usher in a crackling Diwali at the box office and give the audience Money Back entertainment, with fine performances by both Shah Rukh and Kareena. Even young Armaan is efficient. Go have a blast.
Haunted - 3D (2011)
Bollywood Screams in Haunted 3D
Vikram Bhatt's fascination for horror continues, even as the Indian film industry -- and the Desi viewer -- desperately awaits the first authentic bone-chiller from Bollywood. Is Haunted the answer to the chill hunters' prayers?
Not completely. And that's because the story is dog-eared and done-to- death. Almost every horror film has the wailing ghost of a nubile young maiden who sends outs desperate SOSs to anyone who dares to enter her domain. And don't we know why she's wailing! Still, we won't reveal the secret, which in any case, is hardly a secret....
But if the film works -- and it works quite well -- is only because of the special effects of the film. Experiencing the horror in 3D is indeed a novel experience for the viewer, specially since it is smartly done. Each time the ghosts lunge out at you, stick out their tongue or flail their limbs, you jump back in your seat. And yes, there are a lot of ghosts, performing a lot of ghastly acrobatics. There's even a snake sticking out its venom at you and a hurtling brick, almost missing your nose....Great fun.
Other than that, there is the scenic beauty (Pravin Bhatt's cinematography), a hummable music score (Chirantan Bhatt) and the eye for detail (the film moves back and forth in time) which keeps the hours ticking. Performance-wise, the director has opted for a bunch of new actors to pitch in as the lead pair. Sadly, there's nothing extraordinary about them and they hardly leave an impact. It's the veterans, like Achint Kaur and Arif Zakaria who end up giving you the goosebumps. And they do it in adequate measure.
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (2011)
JB's first movie
Bieber's story is one in a billion, lightning in a bottle, and he's successor to the crown, long may be entertain. I don't think that the movie would have a nice story. The film raises many intriguing aspects of Bieber's rise, first and foremost being the fact that he is surrounded by a loving family and road crew, he is in safe hands, he is disciplined like any other kid, he cleans his room at his grandparents' Stratford, Ontario house, roughhouses with his devoted staff backstage and stays friends with his childhood buddies. Follows Justin Bieber with some footage of performances from his 2010 concert tour. It's one big, two hour lump in the throat of feel-good wonderfulness with catchy tunes. Bieber is the undisputed social media star of all time. He has 4.5M Twitter followers and conscientiously keeps them cared for, entertained, and up to date. The point is raised that it took In Synch and Backstreet Boys years to make it; it literally took Bieber months because of his – and his fans use of social media. You think The Beatles came fast and hard? This country boy's way out in front.
