Pasture (2020)
Has flaws, but great concey
Well acted and beautiful to look at. Loved the concept and understand that the director was trying to put the viewer in the mindset of the protagonist. However, i would have preferred to uncover the mystery myself rather than waych a whole confusing movie then just throw 5 minutes of exposition at the end to explain it. Felt like a different film spliced in at the end. Maybe people didn't get it after test screenings and they had to bolt on something at the end to explain it.
Ad Astra (2019)
Beautiful, but pointless, and scientifically inaccurate
This movie looked fantastic, the acting was really good, the soundtrack was great. The only thing missing was an interesting story. It hinted at several interesting potential ways the plot could go, but none of them paid off. Aside from the visuals there was no reason for this movie to be in space.
I can't believe the director is claiming this is scientifically accurate in at all. As a lay-person with knowledge of astronomy from an intro class in college there were glaring errors in the science that took me out of the story. (1) How long would it take to send a round trip message to Neptune from Mars? Hours, not minute. (2) They went to the edge of the heliosphere by traveling to Neptune. Why did they stop 1/4 of the way ther?
Space monkeys and moon pirates? Cool scenes to watch, but were entirely random and didn't influence the plot at all.
I won't spoil anything, but the whole reason for the conflict/plot had zero payoff and the reaction of the characters was nonsensical.
The Caller (2011)
Much better than I expected. Very tense and suspenseful.
The whole subplot about the ex-husband seemed extraneous, but other than that it was a very solid movie.
The basic premise has been done over and over, most notably in Frequency, but this movie had just enough of an angle to make it seem fresh and suspenseful.
The main thing that kept me hooked was the sheer vulnerability of the protagonist. I mean, how do you fight back against something that is happening in your distant past? When the caller slowly reveals the depths of her madness you can't help, but put yourself in the shoes of Mary and wonder how you would fight back when it would require a time machine to do so.
Also, for a movie on time travel, it did really well keeping the inevitable plot holes to a minimum.
