I went to the cinema to see this film out of two reasons; good reviews and Woody Allen.
The good things;
The bad things;
I could understand that some critics would like the movie because of the tremendous talent that is shown by Mrs. Blachett, otherwise I can only think that they tried to bootlick a directorial legend.
The good things;
- Catherin Blanchetts is quite good; a little over the top maybe but it fits perfectly into the movie.
- Some Scenes have this funny moment; the movie really isn't a comedy but there are some standout instances.
The bad things;
- all the other acting; i quite like some of the actors (Cannavale, Baldwin) but none of them really were able to create a character, mostly because the writing didn't allow for it
- the characters; other than 'jasmine' none of the characters seem relatable
- the movie tries to touch so many subjects; "inferiority-complex", "living a simple life", "clash of classes", "drug issues" etc., but ultimately fails to tell us anything about these topics or portray them in an original style
- the writing; the overall story is written in an incoherent "patchy" way and in a extremely boring way, how the movie tries to tell the past-story through conversations is weak, the dialogs feel forced and fake, a lot of the characters and story lines are dropped (chilli's friend, Danny's life, Augie) without any apparent reason
- the movies really fails to accentuate the theme of the movie; a woman who can't cope with herself, her own mistakes.
I could understand that some critics would like the movie because of the tremendous talent that is shown by Mrs. Blachett, otherwise I can only think that they tried to bootlick a directorial legend.
