The Gray Man (2022)
Are crazy drone shots going to be the new shaky cam?
This movie has it all:
- Massive goofs in logic
- Cinematography that will make it impossible to see what's going on
- An absurd plot
- Cliches
- Lazy writing
- A protagonist you don't care about
- Action sequences about as realistic as those of a Marvel movie
- Style without substance
and finally, the worst sin:
- Huge wasted potential.
The budget of this mess was $200 Million.
The budget of Terminator I was $17 Million (adjusted for inflation).
Money doesn't buy a good movie.
This is not a good movie.
PAW Patrol: The Movie (2021)
Much better than I expected
It's no Toy Story or Inside Out, but I enjoyed this movie far more than I thought I would.
It was funny, it was suspenseful, and it was beautiful.
The only caveat: my 5-year old said he wouldn't recommend this movie because of one sad scene in it. As far as I could tell other kids didn't have a problem with that scene though and it may just have been because he's so empathetic.
Lethal Weapon: One Day More (2018)
What a gut punch
The last 3 or 4 minutes of this episode ruined the whole show for me and it was quite an emotional gut punch.
If you like this show, do yourself a favor and turn this episode off after the party scene.
F9 (2021)
Are they making fun of viewers? Is it a persiflage?
After the shenanigans of the last few sequels it was clear that this franchise has its own set of physics and plot armor so thick not even a lightsaber could cut through it, but this latest movie takes it to yet another level of unbelievable.
Turn all common sense off and switch your suspension of disbelief to the highest setting and you may find parts of this movie mildly amusing.
This is dumb popcorn cinema at its finest. Nothing more, nothing less.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
This is DC's Infinity War and Endgame
The pacing of this film takes some getting used to but once you're settled in it's a ride unlike anything else.
It's beautiful, gripping, spectacular, heartfelt, and - dare I say it - a masterpiece.
I'm very happy we got to see it and if cinemas were open, this would be a movie you'd go to to see not once or twice but three times or more.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
It had this one funny scene
At first I thought this was a typical revenge action flick, but turns out it's not. It's trying to be funny, but for me this stood in too stark contrast to the serious scenes and felt not only out of place, but sometimes even in poor taste like Family Guy humor brought to the big screen..
The action didn't feel particularly gripping either. More like slap-stick action ... then again, maybe this was supposed to be the funny part? I'm still not entirely sure.
If they were going for action movie à la Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels they have failed in my opinion.
But hey, there was this one funny scene.
Justified (2010)
Do you like stereotypes and TV clichés?
Suspension of disbelief is not a problem for me, but I have a tough time with overused stereotypes and movie/TV clichés. Unfortunately, Justified seems to be full of those, judging by the first episode, which I turned off twice already.
Other reviewers praised the gun play. By that standard the old A-Team TV show also had great gun play: endless ammo, bad guys can't hit a barn door, good guys nail it on the first try, and those fake gunshot sounds that you've heard in every 90s movie.
To me, two distinct categories of fiction are those that pull you in and let you (almost) forget that you're watching a show or a movie. Examples include Deadwood, Southland, The Wire, or Narcos, to name just a few.
Then there's the second category:
The show or movie that will constantly remind you that you're watching a piece of fiction by having over-the-top stereotypical characters (super dumb and fat nazis for example) or plot twists that smell of lazy writing or people that do things that don't make sense within the scope of who they're supposed to be or obviously fake gun sounds or cringy dialogue ("What are you packing?", "You'll pay to find that out.").
Maybe this is a show for those that wish the Wild West wasn't over and want that male anti-hero gunslinger stereotype to live on regardless of how little it fits into the times.
I'll give it another shot (see what I did there?), but so far I'm disappointed.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Loved it
Maybe it's not as dark as T1 and not as much as a thriller as T2, but to me Dark Fate was a fantastic actual part 3 to the trilogy.
The action was a bit over the top at times and parts of the story were farfetched (to put it mildly), but the dry humor was spot on, as was the new evil Terminator and yes, this is a Terminator movie after all, so some suspension of disbelief is required to be able to enjoy it.
I'm a 37 year old guy from Germany and I can tell you with 100% certainty that I haven't been that on the edge of my seat in a Terminator movie since T2.
Now one last thing: I bet this movie would be rated at least 1 point higher with a male hero, just because some people get a pavlovian response to seeing a female kick ass.
So if you're a Terminator fan and you don't have a problem with women shooting guns, go watch this.
Do it now!!
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Too long, too winded, adds almost nothing
I loved Breaking Bad and I thought the ending was perfect. Then the trailer for El Camino came along and fanned the flames of excitement once more.
Pinkman is back!
The trailer promised action, excitement, and a conclusion to Pinkman's story. You get all that.
You also get 30+ minutes of padding in the form of "flashbacks", without which the movie would have been much better in terms of pacing. Too often I found myself wondering "Why are they showing this?" and I still don't have an answer.
I've heard people say stuff like "Normally I'd rate this a 6, but since it's Breaking Bad it deserves at least an 8." If that's a way of thinking you've adopted in the past you may enjoy El Camino and if not, just temper your expectations going in.
Les frères Sisters (2018)
A fantastic Western, but certainly not a comedy
I enjoyed this greatly, especially since it didn't employ overused Western clichés and instead unfolded against my expectations.
But don't expect this to be funny. IMDB lists this as a comedy and given that John C. Reilly is in it I was expecting a different type of movie, but in my opinion no part of this movie was intended to be funny.
