Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Only slightly above average
Pirates of The Caribbean 2 has the problem that all legacies face: being compared with itself. The original fare was a massive success and loved by all; with this said, it is unfortunate that I have deemed the sequel only slightly above average.
First the pros: the CGI is top notch and the sets and cinemotagraphy are beautiful. The costumes are also top notch and should be given a nod come Oscar time. But now to the Cons: in my opinion, Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), the character everyone came to fall in love with, fell short in this movie. It seemed as if his purpose was minimized as only to provide comic relief. Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) does fairly well as he has certainly matured since the last movie but Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is nearly nonexistent in this movie. Though the parts were acted well, the three stars did not live up to the first.
The secondary characters had an excellent opportunity to shine in this one, which I felt was a great addition.
Long....this movie clocked in at around 2 1/2 hours - I felt much of it could have been cut out.
But through all of this, I will say this: I am guaranteed to see the final POTC. Like the Matrix trilogy - though the second one may not live up to the first, maybe because the first set the bar so high, or because it simply fell short on all angles - I, like others, will want to see the final chapter; to see how it all ends.
But in conclusion, I'm not saying don't see the movie, but don't let the hype get to you. I feel as if so much hype was around this movie (I mean I went to a premiere in which +100 were dressed as pirates) it couldn't live up the bar which was raised. So go into this movie w/ the goal not to judge it against the original, but by itself. And by itself, its above average.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
SEE THIS MOVIE
X-2 and Superman 1 were the best superhero movies I had ever seen. I had gone into this movie with extremely high expectations and this movie exceeded them. This movie was awesome in every aspect. My friends and I kept discussing how the characters had so much more depth. The humans felt more human, and the heroes felt more heroic. You got to feel for their particular plights and this movie was excellent. It is the kind of movie you want to see in theaters. As I left the movie, I hadn't felt so satisfied with a movie since LOTR:ROTK. The action and plot are all excellently driven. And, what I liked most, the comedy was awesome! Since the comedy wasn't extremely blatant, yet extremely smart, I loved it! This is THE summer movie of 2004 (though other movies like King Arthur or The Village haven't come out). Spider Man 1 was the epitome of summer movies. The average to above average movie (along with Pirates of The Carribbean), but Spider Man 2 was one of the best summer movies I have ever seen. SEE SPIDER MAN 2!!!!
Carmen: A Hip Hopera (2001)
Pretty Good, Done Well
In my opinion, this movie was done quite well. It's story goes along pretty well with it's original opera version by Georges Bizet. But Lil Bow Wow was a bad idea, he was just there for product placement in my opinion, and the song sang with him when they are in prison doesn't occur in the real opera (Don Jose sings by himself), but the song's meaning is similar. The only thing that vexed me is the fact that the ending is different that the "Real" ending in the opera. I won't give any spoilers but both are done well and Da Brat narrating was a good idea. The lead parts (Beyonce and Mekhi) are done exceptionally well with Beyonce playing Carmen beautifully, capturing especially the sexuality and Mekhi capturing the emotion and love.
