August: Osage County (2013)
Is There Anything Lower Than A 1 Star Rating?
If there is I would give it lower. This has got to be the most boring film I have ever seen. The very fact that it had to include so many famous actors and actresses was a warning signal for me and I have to say I'm glad I didn't spend money on this. What a waste of time. In truth I really wanted to watch this because it had Benedict Cumberbatch in it. I saw him in Sherlock, Star Trek, The Fifth Estate, and 12 Years A Slave (the last two were atrocious, not because of the acting but the writing and directing were really bad). When I found out that Julia Roberts, Abigail Breslin, and Ewan McGregor were in it I practically had a field day. With such a great cast how could the film go wrong? I soon found out exactly how.
The entire family is crazy, not just one or two of them, the entire family. Cousins are trying to inbreed, you have an overly depressed, incredibly racist mother, there's suicide (or what appears to be suicide), a cheating husband who's letting his daughter do drugs, this family has it all. And what's worse nobody has any redeeming qualities. They're all a bunch of angry looney toons who have nothing better to do than sit and fight, smoke weed, occasionally mate with another family member.
I have to be fair and say that the actors were not the problem, they all did a fantastic job with their parts. But seriously, what were the writers thinking? I almost laughed at how bad it was.
I'm just going to cut my complaining short and advise those fortunate enough to come across bad reviews to listen to them. This film was horrendously awful and why anyone would want to watch it is beyond my reasoning.
Les Misérables (2012)
Stunning
When I first watched this movie I was a bit skeptical as to how it would turn out, after all, when a movie has to include so many famous actors and actresses in it, it generally spells disaster and the writing and directing fall so short that the movie is a train wreck, nothing short of abominable. With Les Mis, not so.
Hugh Jackman did a fantastic job with his role as the incredibly conflicted Jean Valjean and Anne Hathaway was brilliant as well, even though we didn't see much of her. My personal favorite character though was Javert.
Russell Crowe did a phenomenal job with his part and I really enjoyed seeing a different side to Javert, not just the evil man that a lot of actors portray when they play the part. All in all I really couldn't call him a villain because he was so convinced that Valjean was the criminal and when he finally came to terms with the fact that Valjean had changed it wasn't that he just didn't want to believe it, it was that he had wasted umpteen years of his life chasing down a man who proved that everything he believed was false.
The music was wonderful and some of the sets they had were breathtaking. I thoroughly enjoyed the rooftop scene when Javert was singing Stars because it was just a really beautiful scene.
The film was fairly emotional, barring the occasional moments where my father would sigh and upset the feeling of the scene, as he did not feel quite as enthused about being there as I was.
The last few scenes will leave you weeping so bring some Kleenex, and don't wear eyeliner.
Overall it was a fantastic movie.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Get Past The First Forty Minutes And You've Struck Gold
After viewing the trailer I was quite curious about this film, at least curious enough that I felt the need to go to the theater and buy a ticket to watch it. I have two bad things to say about this film and they didn't drag my rating down too much because I felt that the rest of the movie was excellent. So, the first forty minutes of the film weren't as good as I'd hoped, I found it kind of boring and personally, I thought his daydreams were stupid but I have to say that it was understandable why it was so boring at first. After all, you introduce a character who's never been anywhere or done anything, the end result should be boring and I think that's what the writers were trying to get you to understand, that his life was so boring he started daydreaming to put meaning into it. After that the movie became exciting and heartwarming and it took a drastic turn from where it had first started off. The acting was wonderful, the directing was excellent, and the writing was perfect. It wasn't quite good enough to make me rate it ten stars but it was very close.
Tangled (2010)
My Favorite Disney Movie
I didn't get to see this movie in theaters but wanted to see it after viewing the trailer, however, due to a lack of money I waited for it to come out on DVD and then got it. The characters were amazing and I fell in love with the music and I gotta say the fact that Zachary Levi was in it did help things but it was mostly the story and the comedy in the movie that hooked me. It almost has the same feeling as Frozen but I find I enjoyed it more. If you liked Frozen or any kind of Disney movie at all I highly recommend this one because the characters really grow on you, the music is catchy, and all in all it's just a really fun movie to watch.
Frozen (2013)
Had The Feel Of Tangled
Today I went to the theater with a sense of disappointment because I had wanted to watch another film but instead was sucked into watching Frozen with my family. I went in not in the mood to watch the film but I figured I was there so I might as well give the movie a chance and so with a downtrodden feeling I began to watch the movie. Within the first five minutes of the film I had been pulled in and I found the show cute, heartwarming, and entertaining. There was a lot that made me laugh and there was a twist I wasn't expecting even though I'd attempted my best guess at how the show was going to end and I got half of it right but I also got half of it wrong and I love a show that isn't completely predictable. It had the feeling of Tangled and I didn't think it had as good of music as Tangled but it was definitely worth watching and if I could have seen it in 3D I would have. It was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time and I highly recommend it.
The Legend of Hercules (2014)
Not As Bad As Everyone Claimed But Not Good Enough To Pay 13.50 For A 3D Ticket
So, I went into this show thinking that maybe people were just being overly critical of it in their reviews and I think that one star is just a little bit cruel considering I've seen far worse including Slipstream, 12 Years A Slave, and among other things (I don't even know why I was watching it but I did) The Mystical Adventures of Billy Owens. On the other hand, I don't think it was worth paying seven dollars for a ticket at the movie theater and I certainly feel my thirteen dollars and fifty cents was wasted on 3D. To be honest, I don't have a lot of good comments for this movie, I just didn't think it was as terrible as everyone claimed. In my opinion the acting was poor with the exception of two people who ironically have the same first name, Liam Garrigan and Liam McIntyre, and Kellan Lutz was certainly not fit to play the role of the main character. He may have had brawn but the extent of his acting was a few seconds of puppy dog eyes at the camera and it wasn't impressive. The fight scenes weren't awful but they were mediocre and a bit boring at times. Many people have likened the style of the fights to that of Gladiator and it did have that feel to but Gladiator was much much better. My biggest problem with the show was the lion. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at something so hokey in my life. The attempt at making the lion look menacing was even funnier. All in all it wasn't the worst movie I've seen but it wasn't something I'd want to buy.
12 Years a Slave (2013)
The Ancient Art Of....Staring?
Let me start off by saying that I like a good movie based on a true story like Schindler's List, The Butler, A Beautiful Mind, We Bought A Zoo, etc., etc. I'm also fully aware that not all events will be entirely factual so when I went into this movie I wasn't going in expecting accuracy in any form. What I did go in expecting was a good performance by great actors and I must say the acting was fantastic, but unfortunately the rest of the film was a complete train wreck. I felt it had potential at first and then that feeling quickly dissipated after watching the first beating commence and continued to diminish after seeing the attempted hanging where he walked around on his toes for at least a good twenty to thirty seconds and we had to sit and watch. I didn't think it was possible for the movie to get more boring but then they threw in yet another thirty second scene where we all proceeded to stare at the main character's face while he sat idle, occasionally moving his head from side to side. I wanted to feel emotion for these poor characters but every emotion that I had was quickly ruined by incredibly long, drawn out, and unnecessary scenes. Not only did I have to sit through the agonizing, stretched out scenes but whenever there was about to be a significant lapse of time within the main character's life they'd add in a bonus five to seven seconds where we stared at a bunch of trees. I'd like to say that I was moved by the movie or felt some sort of enjoyment in watching it but in truth the only touching moment I truly had was at the end of the film when I realized it was FINALLY over. I'd liken it's boringness to The Fifth Estate but honestly it was far worse. My advice to you would be to ignore the plethora of ten star reviews and think twice before you decide to pick it up for movie rental once it finally comes out on DVD.
Doctor Who (2005)
What I Thought Of Doctor Who
At first when I began to watch this show I thought that it seemed a bit hokey and the graphics weren't the best. However I found that after I got over how hokey the aliens were I enjoyed the show.
Eccleston who plays The Doctor (at least for a while) takes his character to all new levels. Like his other performances, including Heroes and some other shows, he is extremely believable. You soon find yourself being carried along with every emotion The Doctor is feeling. At times Eccleston proves to be a bit strange for the part of The Doctor but you also find that his quirkiness keeps you watching the show. To put it in simple terms he is absolutely brilliant and I can't imagine someone playing the part better than him.
My suggestion is if you are bored and have absolutely nothing to do, take some time, sit down at the computer or turn on the television, and find Doctor Who.
