Ian Fairweather is one of the most outstanding painters to have worked most of his life in Australia, and Aviva Ziegler has created an engrossing film of his life and work, despite the extremely limited visual record. Unhurried, thoughtful, unpretentious, intriguing.
Although his paintings now command enormous prices, and are in virtually every major gallery in Australia, Ian Fairweather's life has been little known to the wider public, and the insights of this film into the trajectory of both his earlier peripatetic life and later hermit-like existence, and how these manifest in the works, is fascinating.
This deserves to be widely available.
