Lessons in Chemistry (2023)
Genius that touches the heart
This is a an 8 part mini series, and it is brilliant! I am not a fan of Brie the person but I have to confess, her acting talent is something to behold. She embodies a unique character, with unusual traits and delivers a performance like I never seen before. The story telling is perfect, amazing pace, detail and emotion. The series takes you through a life's journey, broken not into chapters, but into pieces of a puzzle that slowing form to complete the picture. This will make you feel all of the emotions and you will be left with what I can only describe and the warmest hug you will have had in ages.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
Heartbreaking dissapointment
This is heartbreaking, being such a fan I really wanted this to blow me away, but sadly despite my attempts I couldn't see beyond the failings.
The plot could have worked, it follows the basic formular that we are all accustomed to. What failed was the way AH was extracted from the film, it made the movie feel awkward, forced and very obviously rehashed.
The special effects were great.
The quality of acting was really poor, wooden and unnatural. The story telling was fractured and lacked flow or continuity. It is also true, there was no chemistry between Mera and Aquaman,
This is one to erase from the chronicles of DC.
Rooney (2022)
A glimpse of the greatness and the tragedy of Wayne Rooney
This documentary that chronical the story that is Rooney, depicts how a boy, turns into a man, turns into a leader, and becomes an inspiration. His greatness on the pitch is contrasted against the catalogue of mistakes off the pitch, but it is without a doubt that he is one of the greatest footballers the world has ever known. Something also depicted with grace and subtlety is Collen's role in his life, a women who originally was seen as a privileged WAG, however it soon becomes clear that above all she is a wife, a mother and woman. Her performance in this documentary either deserves an Oscar, or she truly carries the pain of what she has had to endure over the many years. It is not her strength that shines through but her vulnerability, a reminder that millions of women across the world also have to deal with the stupidity of their men. Running away, taking the kids, revelling in his millions is the easy option, an option that lesser women would have taken, Collen is not weak, foolish or naïve, she is a women with the same strength as Wayne, she is a mother with a greater commitment than Wayne and she is a wife with greater loyalty than Wayne.
Ted Lasso (2020)
Hard to describe brilliance!
This is one of those very difficult to describe programs. It blends all of the emotions that you could possibly imagine ranging from laughter right through to tears. The writing is absolute brilliance, creating characters that make you feel you've known them all your life.
The individual characters are perfectly brought to the screen what are clearly very talented actors. You do not have to be a fan of football to fall in love with this series.
This series will appeal to the whole family and draw you in to world that you will not want to leave. Possibly one of the most binge worthy series I've seen in the past decade.
Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks (2022)
An all time low, and a sad day for the fans
Since 1963 the franchise has carefully shaped and created the whoniverse. It has had it ups and downs, but has always stayed honest to itself and the millions of fans all over the world. This New Years Eve special take a very unoriginal story of groundhog day and attempts to translate it through the franchise. The result is so poorly written that I was left devastated and in shock. The plot is comical, but in a bad way, the undertones of wokeness are just insulting, even to those of the LGBT+ community, and there were moments where the narrative was just so bad even John Bishop couldn't keep a straight face. I for one cannot wait for the replacement of Chibnall.
Hawkeye (2021)
Think Die Hard, think Marvel, think Christmas
OK, confession, I love Marvel and I can be very critical. I love Die Hard, and I love Christmas. This mini series is a Eton Mess of everything you love and should never go together, but it just works! There is action, discovery, twists, and lots of fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and strikes the perfect balance between fantasy and having a giggle at itself. Its only let down is the mother, who just doesn't sell the character, but everyone else is brilliant. This mini series just made me and my whole family feel good at Christmas.
Lost in Space (2018)
Big budget, big action and big entertainment
This three season spectacular science-fiction series is filled with twists and turns at every moment. The actors are well written and well developed with depth and breadth, good back stories are revealed throughout numerous episodes. The special effects are amazing and the audience easily empathise with the alien life forms. It is a relentless rollercoaster of peril adversity and high emotional content.
For science fiction lovers and those prepared to deviate from the original 1960s backstory this series will deliver over and over again. I strongly recommend lost in space for those who enjoy science-fiction at its best.
Captain Marvel (2019)
A good movie, leave your politics and prejudices at the front door
This movie has received a lot of coverage leading up to and since being released. I am a middle aged, white, straight, well educated and successful married guy. I read the critics (people like Nedrotic.com and others). Most of what they share is spot on, the free speech thinkers do represent the fans. I only went to see the movie last night because my 9 yo daughter asked me. My expectations were very low!
The movie blew me away, and the icing on the cake was the look of joy on my daughter's face.
The film does not press any agendas, neither of sex, race, religion or politics. It is a science fiction fantasy story, well told. The plot is sensible, understandable, and heart felt. It was fun, enjoyable and entertaining. The pace was perfect, the imagery was fantastical and colorful, the characters were engaging. I am a real, hard core fan of the universe and the genre, this movie was a delightful piece of work that delivered.
Brie Larson, as a human being is a little naive and dare i say it, ignorant, living in a privileged world where she is able to use her sex to gain advantage, setting feminism back 5 decades! But, she delivered a great performance, I loved her in the role. Most luvvies aren't that smart and survive on the words written by others! So lets not be too hard on her, she acted beautifully and nailed the role.
The movie does not fit in the Marvel universe perfectly, but lets remind ourselves that this is fantasy, perhaps the fans should also show some imagination!
Captain Marvel's legacy will be set in stone in the Avengers: Endgame, we have establish characters that the fans have a lot of love and loyalty for. All I ask (if I could!) is that the movie makes protect the spirit and soul of the marvel universe that was inherited by the fans on 12 November 2018.
If you want to be entertained, dazzled and escape to a new universe, then leave your politics at the front door and step in and emerge yourself into a pretty good movie
The Karate Kid (2010)
Good, solid entertainment
If you have seen the original then the plot wont be a massive surprise. When I sat down to watch this film I was expecting very little however, I am pleased so say that I found the film very entertaining and the 2hr 20min flashed passed. Young Smith is not bad at all. Mr Chan is getting better with age. When it comes to the fight scenes I have to say the young lad is amazing, fit flexible and knows the moves. Very convincing. The cinematography is awesome, even managed to get some major landmarks in there. It also have some good cultural references. My only word of warning is do not expect a master piece. If you are after a nice evening in and don't mind the cheesy plot, you will enjoy this piece of light entertainment.
