The Cafe (2011)
We liked the first three episodes
We liked the first three episodes and we were surprised that it was cancelled after only two seasons. Then it became a slog. We had read that the second season was better so we kept going. Then the second season was worse in our opinion but we kept going with a lot of skipping past repetitive and slow parts to get to the end. Then we get to the end but there is no end. I got here because it was so strange to have a two part episode where part one and part two are the same. Not sure if this is a Britbox screwup or it just happened like that when the series was cancelled suddenly. For me sublimineyes got it exactly right.
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (2008)
I liked it
I agreed with all the negative reviews above, but I didn't care. I liked this documentary. It had lots of Johnny Cash music so I was probably going to like it no matter what. But there was more. I thought they did a nice job with using pictures taken from the concerts to tell the story. Sure video would have been nice, but if there wasn't video what they did was at least entertaining.
I agree that some of the animation wasn't always appropriate to the story they were telling, but again, I didn't care. I enjoyed it.
And they told several interesting stories in the course of the documentary. The story of Glen Sherley was very interesting to me and I looked him up and found out a bit more about him. I also enjoyed the comments from Cash's friends and family.
Overall, if you can get past the imperfections that people pointed out above, you're going to enjoy this documentary.
The Lost World (1992)
I'd skip it
Caveat: I gave up after about an hour.
An interesting and entertaining beginning followed by poor acting, hoke dialog, and special effects that would have made Ed Wood cringe.
Our band of merry adventurers after 17 days paddling up an African river doesn't show the slightest signs of sun exposure or physical discomfort. They hike through dense jungles with the ease of people strolling through a city park. The movie's plot devices have such a contrived flavor that it is hard not to imagine the writer's moaning with discomfort as they created them.
Davies' performance was the only bright note for me, although I disagreed a bit with the folks that didn't like the kid. I thought he did a reasonable job, certainly compared to the rest of the cast who in their defense were provided with pretty bad material to work with.
I noticed a few people liked Warner's performance also. I wasn't enthused but it was serviceable and far from the worst in the movie, IMHO.
