Doom (2005)
What more do you want...?
Here I am reading all these negative reviews and thoughts about this movie by fans and critics alike all having a cry because its nothing like the game and its basically a by-the-numbers action flick. I say so freaking what? Lets have a look at what we are dealing with shall we. Firstly we all know how popular and awesome the Doom games and naturally turning it into a movie was gonna be an effort. Well least they tried I say and a decent effort it was. You see people have to realize if you made a carbon copy of the games it would fail much more because people would think "why watch something we have played through before?" which is my point. The filmmakers obviously seen this, seen how difficult making a Doom movie would be and thus decided to go for something new in the Doom universe.
If they had all the monsters etc coming from hell in the movie then there goes all believability and realism out the window. The whole virus angle was a bit silly yes but look at it this way...at least it added some realism and still gave us the demons we loved killing even if there weren't very many. If they make a sequel which would be cool then they can still use the whole hell thing easy done, they did in this one if people actually noticed properly...
And the first person sequence? Now that was so much like Doom in the way it was shot (excuse the pun), the random appearances of the enemies, and the atmosphere itself. Look as far as games to movies go this is one of better ones, alongside Silent Hill and Mortal Kombat. Think yourselves lucky Uwe Boll didn't make it and absolutely rape the hell out of it seriously. Bottom line is though look at it as a movie Doom, and not the freaking game.
Biohazard Outbreak: File 2 (2004)
Another relaxing visit to ol Raccoon City...again
No matter which way you look at it Resident Evil will always and forever will be my favourite series of survival horror games, yes better than Silent Hill. I won't comment on the movies because lets face it they can't hold a candle to the games.
As a long time follower of the series I was quite intrigued to see a Resident Evil game that lets us play as a series of survivors with their own uniqueness stuck in everyone's favourite zombie infested hell hole...Raccoon City. Well the original outbreak had its flaws but on the whole it was somewhat refreshing to play with completely new characters and stories set during the events of the first three.
Now along comes the sequel and well...we are still stuck in that place and nothing at all has changed really. We still have the same group of characters, same moves, weapons etc. What has changed though and about time is the variety of enemies affected by that nasty virus. Zombie elephants, zombie lions, zombie hyena's...no I ain't joking they have them and for good reason. As much fun as it is wiping out zombies they just get bloody boring (excuse the pun) so these new batch of infected mammals is a nice change of horror pace...and I use that term literally.
Apart from the new enemies not much else has changed really. The graphics seems to have had a touch up which is good, and more story has been added as the original left things unanswered. Sadly though the A.I of your fellow survivors is still pretty poor as they run around for no reason or just stand there when being attacked.
As a Resident Evil on the whole though its great to play as there are too many imitators out there that have ripped off what Resident Evil started. Basically if you want to relive the glory days of Raccoon city then by all means pick this up and have a visit.
Friday the 13th (2009)
Jason returns...yet he is the wrong one
Firstly I will say that I am a huge (excuse the pun...) Friday the 13th fan, even if the last couple of entries utterly sucked. Though I will excuse Freddy vs Jason, only just though.
Anyways when I heard the legend himself was getting the "reboot" treatment I naturally nearly died as most hardcore fans did I'm sure. Well when the first trailer came out it looked pretty good and could have possibly worked and brought our favorite brain-challenged teen killer back to us, but alas we were all wrong.
You would think that with this reboot treatment they would try to break the mold and not rely on cliché's and make it a carbon copy of the originals, but as it turns out they couldn't help themselves. They are all here my friends: the sex-starved blond, the know it all, the stoner, the token black guy, the random guy who serves no purpose, and the hero. This isn't so bad but the dribble they spewed was is just annoying pure and simple. Oh and one of gets taken by Jason because she looks like Jason's mother...yeah.
Jason himself has had a slight make over too. Firstly he's still the huge intimidating brutal son of a four legged animal we all know and love, yet here lies the change. Jason has developed himself a nice IQ, a schizophrenic complex and has even built himself a series of underground tunnels, busy boy he has become. I don't know about you but I prefer Jason to be a slow, imposing and ultimately a indestructible mongoloid ala zombie Jason. Its not to say the new Jason is bad but he's no Kane Hodder type Jason. The best thing about this Jason is he was unbelievably savage, and I mean savage, he didn't screw around.
The movie on the hole though was very well shot movie. Atmospheric from the start, has a nice gloss to it, and even has some nice suspense added to it which the last ones severely lacked. Its definitely not the best remake but certainly not the worst.
