Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
The Worst Sequel to the Series
I cannot really review this movie without giving away the plot so will focus on the acting and theme.
Unrealistic and unimaginative come to mind on the storyline.
The main characters are not believable in their roles or create any suspense for a reprisal and follow up movie.
The character I wanted to see the most appears for 30 seconds!
JJ Abrams should stick to Star Trek. I actually know more about the force then he does.
In summary I wanted these to be a continuation of the great work our trio of hero's did in the first 3 but was left feeling disappointed and let down by them. The movie is just over 2 hrs long and dragged at a snails pace. The action is fast but disjointed and I am trying to stay positive because I love the franchise but would not be watching this movie a second time. Once was enough.
Sorry I cannot be any more productive about it. The force is definetaly not strong in this one!
Defending Against Attack 'The Complete Guide' (2008)
A No Holds Barred Training DVD!
Shotokan Karate exponent and activist Frank produces a massive teaching curve of techniques including punches, kicks and blocks. Knife defences and attacks are covered along with a whole array of street fight sequences making the learning real.
The music is fantastic and hypnotic with lots of Iranian instrumental scores.
Also new artists have teamed up in this production such a Michelle Ericsson's "You Can't Stop Now" in one of the hardest 3 minutes of non- stop 'bagwork' ever captured on film.
Mark Lawn also provides great instrumental scores throughout the DVD production to some of the training sessions.
Overall a great training film with lots of learning making the watcher part of the action. The techniques are repeated to music several times with no breaks to allow the viewer to practice along with Frank!
A great film!
The Karate Kid (2010)
At best a movie to watch when nothing else is on!
Firstly I have watched the original movie with Ralph Macchio and Pat Morrita (RIP) who had great screen presence and fitted into their roles like bread and butter.
The title is incorrect as Jackie Chan teaches the boy Kung Fu not karate! The film is based in China which is great with locations such as the Chinese Wall which is the only 'Wonder' in this movie!
Mr Smith has launched his sons acting career by putting him into a very bold role which he does not pull off due to his age (too young.
The training montages do not work and the teaching style is not realistic even for someone who has never practiced martial arts.
The on-screen chemistry of the actors does not work although Jackie Chan pulls off his role as mentor - because he is a martial artist and very skilled.
What a shame karate professional were not used for the filming and making of this high budget movie which fails to hit the mark on and off the mats!
I switched the film off half way through it which by the way is over 2 hours long! So not sure what the objective of the movie was other than give your son as much airtime as possible!
Awefully disappointing I hope a second remake stays true to the original but it will be hard to follow since that has set a Kung Fu scene. So remakes now will all be on a similar downward slope.
