Jake's Closet (2007)
Like a Modern Day Pan's Labyrinth
Jake's Closet has the emotional power of Kramer vs. Kramer combined with the imagination of Pan's Labyrinth. Even the beginning special effect seems to give a nod to Pan's Labyrinth. But this is a story that takes place in modern times, not in a war sixty years ago and in that way it has even more resonance today. Jake's Closet is about a boy, an only child, practically alone on summer vacation, dealing with his family falling apart. It's a horror movie like The Others and The Sixth Sense, a horror movie for the thinking person. If you're looking for a slasher movie, this won't be your cup of tea but if you're looking for a story that is both touching and suspenseful with good acting, this is the movie for you. At the screening I saw, I swear there was one moment where the entire audience screamed. I highly recommend catching this film.
Eastern Promises (2007)
wonderful film!
Viggo is incredible in this film. I really thought he deserved to win the Oscar. His performance is not flashy and dramatic but he buries himself so much into the character that you really believe him. I heard an interview when this film first came out and David Cronenberg talked about the in-depth research Viggo did for his part. It really shows. It's a great lesson in acting in doing your homework. You really believe he's from Russia. The supporting cast is great too. David Cronenberg is a fantastic director. I'm glad I finally got around to seeing this film. The Fly was amazing. History of Violence was great and this is another wonderful movie. I strongly recommend this film.
In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007)
Hilarious, Touching, Fantastic Writing!
This movie is both hilarious and touching with one of the funniest openings I've seen in a long time. It's a great example for all writers of how to start a movie. This film captures so precisely the pressure to belong, to be with someone, to be a part of a moment that society deems special. In this case - the New Year's kiss. Wilson meets up with a girl, Vivian, who is so annoying at first and only the pressure to not be alone on New Year's Eve keeps him hanging with her. As the story continues, we see more into Vivian's character and grow to like her more. It's beautifully shot and well-written. It's one of the strongest films to come out of last year's film festival scene. It's a little indie film that deserves a long life at the box office.
