What Lies Beneath (2008 Video)
9/10
Thought-provoking and entertaining extra.
26 July 2008
I have been a regular purchaser of the Dr Who DVDs for some years now, and it's interesting to see how the various special features on each disc are evolving. The producers seem to be spreading their wings with subjects that are not always directly related to the main programmes on each disc. This programme takes a look at the various sub-texts at play in Season 7 of Dr Who, and in particular Dr Who and the Silurians. The result is a real eye-opener, placing the story firmly within the social and political context of the times. Interviewees include none other than Roy Hattersley, and the treatment is enlivened with a light-hearted graphic approach and some wry narration from Geoffrey Palmer. This is a thought provoking piece that makes one consider Dr Who And The Silurians in a whole new light.

Wonderfully nostalgic history of Dr Who comics.

What a surprise to find a documentary about Dr Who comics tucked away on the DVD of The Time Meddler. As someone (just about) old enough to have bought some of the comics discussed in this brief programme it was a treat to hear about how the Dr Who strip began all those years ago. This is a brisk but thoroughly researched programme, packed full of comic strip art and enthusiastic interviewees, most of whom don't look old enough to have been born when William Hartnell was the Doctor! The highlight is probably an interview with Bill Mevin, who drew the original Doctor Who comic strip back in 1964. The subject is perhaps a curious choice (it's got little to do with The Time Meddler) but this is a welcome addition to the Doctor Who range. There is another 'episode' of Stripped for Action on the Black Orchid DVD.
