Deep Water (2016)

Ultimately disappointing

Yael Stone is either not a very good actress or miscast. She is not convincing or believable. The black leather jacket she wears looks silly and the high heel boots are ridiculous. She is chasing and fighting bad guys in boots she can barely walk in? The story is interesting and the show has some moments but it could have been much better.

Like a dessert at 7-11

This P.of S. was highly recommended to me by two friends that have great

(similar to mine) taste in films and have seen more than anyone I know.

I have no idea what they saw in this movie. Sadistic, cruel and repulsive is fine in an entertaining movie, but this is a windbag effort trying to pass itself off as highbrow lowbrow movie making.Or is it lowbrow highbrow?

The ancient generation gap cliché "no redeeming social value" comes to mind. Bill Pullman is trying, maybe a little to hard, and except for the kid the rest of the acting seems self-conscious and kinda lame.

Save yourself from this and watch a double feature of "In Cold Blood" and "The Hitcher".

As somebody said, this would never have been made if Jennifer Lynch was not the overrated David Lynch's daughter.

Frustrating

Warning: Spoilers
I am giving two stars because I finished this movie frustrated and could not wait for it to end. Like a con, I suppose, a movie should not be too clever for its own good. "Bloom" leaves clever in the dust and heads for self-important and pretentious. At times I sensed the makers rubbing their hands together with glee congratulating each other on being so damn smart. On the plus side, Rachel W. was very good and her romance with Adrien B. did hit a soft spot with me. Perhaps the international scenery was meant to add glamor or intrigue, but it just made it seem more contrived and precious. Should have shot it in Cleveland,it might have actually made the movie less slick but more attractive.

Honest to God, halfway through B.E. I thought, "This director has watched too many John Cass. movies." I did not know his daughter directed it until I looked at the box. Lots of scenes with only one or two people on screen does not necessarily make drama. Nora was annoying, not sympathetic, and did not make an ideal victim. You don't get a Purple Heart for self-inflicted wounds. Was that supposed to be an arty ending? I was just glad it was over. On a positive note, I gotta give Zoe C. credit for doing something that was arguably a little risky, although it seemed tailored for film-fest crowd. I went out with a woman like Nora a few times, until I realized she was boring and an emotional black hole.

In B.E.II, he dumps her after 2 weeks and swears never to go out with an American woman again.
