Life Begins (1932)

Pre-Code Gem
2 January 2013
I'm not one for weepers, but this film fascinated me. Not so much for the story or the acting, but for the frankness. If it wasn't for precode films, we would never have an honest glimpse of the issues of that era, which actually aren't too terribly different from our concerns in the present. This film tackles a C-Section, pregnancy/giving birth while incarcerated, adoption, losing a baby during childbirth, drinking during pregnancy, maternal bonding, and even hints at the kidnapping of an infant by a woman with mental heath issues who desperately longs for one of her own. Some issues are commonplace in this era, and some of the health concerns have been addressed due to scientific advancements and public awareness, but unfortunately, some issues are still being battled. We see some of the worst cases on the nightly news. It's strange to think we went from this open and honest format on women's heath issues to showing adults sleeping in single, separate beds. I sincerely wonder how censoring these realities set us all back? I recommend this to anyone fascinated by precode Hollywood films, who doesn't mind a little bit of melodrama.

Delightful
16 June 2012
I found this movie simply delightful! It was lighthearted and fun, even though (or perhaps because?) it contained much conniving, a dash of revenge, a spat of violence, and a heaping helping of delicious conspiracy. The protagonist and all her cohorts are certainly not pillars of virtue, but then again, in reality, people never really are, are they? Besides, all the shenanigans going on are what make it so fun to watch! Ingrid Bergman is gorgeous as the leading lady, and Gary Cooper perfectly cast as the dashing Texan and the rest of the supporting cast definitely added to the fun! Don't get hung up on the history, improbability or the few bad reviews. Give it a chance. It left me with a smile, and I'm a tough cookie! Enjoy! WARNING: Do not watch this if you are looking for a serious period piece with lofty values, and high moral content. Watch it with some popcorn, in your jammies when you're in the mood for some light entertainment. It fits the bill.

The Actress (1953)
I see Ruth Gordon
8 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I have always adored Ruth Gordon, and I can truly imagine how she must have been in her youth after watching this film. I never even knew she wrote or did any screenplays before reading these reviews, and will definitely have to investigate further. For those who wrote harsh reviews; although I can understand how her character might have seemed shrill, I really could see the real Ruth Gordon being that "over the top" dramatic, fanciful and determined. I definitely see this as a tribute to her father - portraying how gruff he was throughout only made his contribution to her career in the end more poignant. Spencer Tracy was in great form! I believed his salty character as her father. It may not be for everyone, but I really enjoyed this film.
