Return to Green Acres (1990 TV Movie)

Missed the mark
10 June 2008
Yes, it missed the mark big time. I've always felt that reunion shows of this ilk (i.e.,old 30-minute sitcoms) should be done in the same 30-minute time-frame. And, in this particular case, should have been done on similar sets as the TV show instead of filming outdoors in real settings. Because the producers and/or writers chose real-life settings for this reunion show AND stretched it to two hours, the look and feel of the show was completely alien to the original series. For me, that was the first glaring mistake. They should have stuck to the cheap indoor sets and made it a half-hour long. Maybe then they could've used the money they'd have saved and spent it on better writers, because the next glaring mistake was the bad writing. It stuck out like a sore thumb. I give this movie two stars instead of one, because the only endearing aspect of this "mistake" was seeing most of the original cast together again.

Warning: Spoilers
Great movie. Great acting (Glodblum was cheated out of an Academy Award nomination, as most film critics agreed). I always felt that the biggest improvement over the original with David Hedison was the concept of metamorphosis compared to the instantaneous transformation. Don't get me wrong--I think the original was done extremely well. In fact, I think the original excelled in the "tragedy" aspect. It was much more tragic for the wife to kill her beloved of many years, and the father of their little boy, than it was for the girlfriend to kill her just-met lover in this version. The impact of tragedy and loss was much more palpable. I've always felt that if someone combined the tragedy of the original with the metamorphosis of the remake, they would have the best of both worlds and have a superior movie over the first two. All in all, a great addition to any movie-lover's library.

You CAN get the DVD (if you really want it)
2 January 2008
This movie is, in fact, available on DVD through Movies Unlimited (moviesunlimited.com). However, don't expect a DVD-quality print of this movie; it looks just like it did when you watched it on those late night sci-fi showcases in the 60s (which, to me, is part of its appeal). Not listed on the DVD case is the trailer for the movie, which is tacked on at the very end. I was glad to add be able to add this to my movie collection. I gave the movie 4 out of 10 stars based on it's "cheese factor". Sometimes the cheapest movies are the most endearing, and this one is a prime example. Silly dialog, homemade sets and costumes, and laughable special effects. This is not a movie to watch in prime time. This is a movie to plug in either late at night when nothing else is on and everyone else is fast asleep and you're feeling a little groggy yourself, or early afternoon when you're home from work with a bad cold and drowsy from all the medicine. Then you won't take it so seriously. Enjoy.
