Harvie Krumpet (2003)
A Gamut of Emotions
What a fantastic 20 minutes!! I watched this on SBS the other night, and I was utterly charmed. Its funny, poignant, touching, sad and has a few life lessons we could all take on board. Adam Elliot deservedly won the Oscar for this one. Its charmingly narrated by Geoffrey Rush who has such a wonderful voice, it shows the entire lifetime of a Polish boy who moves to Australia to start a new life when his parents are killed in a tragic accident.
Bad luck seems to plague the lovable character, he lives alone, endures illness, falls in love, has a family and ends up realising some truths about life. I saw an interview with Elliot on Andrew Denton's Enough Rope programme and he is as utterly charming and humble as his little character, everything from his mum knitting Harvie's costumes to being awestruck at the Oscars. He is destined for big things. Dont miss it!
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Love Blooms, the Dark Side Looms....
Episode II of the Star Wars series exploded onto our screens this week. Filmed in various locations including Tunisia and Australia, I was stunned by the visual feast and unbelievable audio (the most significant moment sound-wise is when Jango Fett is chased by Obi Wan and he throws some supersonic type bombs, the explosion sound is quite astounding). This film brings together the love story between Anaikin and Amidala, Natalie Portman shows grace and poise as the latter and relative newcomer Hayden Christensen is good as the teen Anaikin but not great. Ewan McGregor does nicely expanding Obi Wan's character and there are some good supporting players including Jimmy Smits and Christopher Lee. There are some very funny moments in the film and the crowd I was with at a midnight screening cheered and clapped in quite a few scenes. Best moment for me was one featuring Yoda and Duku, you will be quite amazed!!!
