The Golden Goose (2021)
My brain just melted into rainbow sprinkled Peep goo....
Seeing the 7.3 rating here and looking for a family Easter movie, we somehow landed on this gem. I think my 7 year old was attracted to the adorable cartoon "goose" that looks like a duckling!
I feel swindled. Lied to. Robbed. How the heck did this get a 7.3 rating??! I can endure some bad children's TV. The description says that the golden goose discovers the "true meaning" of Easter. So I thought, well hey, this must be about Jesus... right?!
Well folks, considering that Easter is actually NOT about bunnies, chicks, and eggs, I was hopeful that the "true meaning" would have some sort of messaging about JESUS since Easter has been a part of the Christian calendar since the SECOND CENTURY!!
BESIDES the weird messaging about asking random people what "Easter means to them" including people from oThEr ReLiGioNs.....! It was just painfully bad. The animation, the voice overs, the script. I feel like this was made in some kind of freshman level movie course!
If you want to make a non religious Easter movie about bunnies and ducks that's fine. There are already plenty of those. But for the love... don't bill it as a movie about the "true" meaning of Easter!! And for all of you that gave this a high rating, may your tires be flat and your coffee lukewarm!!
Wish (2023)
Good music/ Weak plot and character
The music is really good. I suspect that a couple of songs will become pretty popular. But the character development is some of weakest I've seen.
I have a theory... the folks at Disney know that there is as much potential money in music as there is in the movie itself. So... by keeping the content of the songs vague so that it can be sung anywhere in any context, makes it easy for it to be used in a variety of settings thus maximizing its potential capital gains.
On to the story. There is SO. LITTLE. BACKSTORY to any of the characters! There is a huge glaring missed opportunity and that is the redemption arc that King M could and should have gone through! We know that there is something bad that happened to him as a child but again... it's super vague. We know that him keeping wishes safe started out with noble intentions but power corrupts him. We know that his wife had genuine love and affection for him but then evil magic gets a hold of him and poof she's done with him.
Our heroine isn't much better. We know that her dad died of sickness (every hero need a dead parent or two right Disney?!) Her mother has an unfulfilled wish that we never learn about what it is. Asha herself doesn't seem to have clear goals or desires aside from discovering the need to give everyone's wishes back to them. There really isn't a clear message about what people are supposed to do with their wishes. Apparently it's a large part of your heart but is it like a dream? Hope? A guide? At the end of the movie Asha is granted a wand. She does express early in the movie that she'd like to learn magic but she actually shows very little aptitude for it from beginning to end!
It had some funny moments and my kids and I laughed and bobbed our heads to the music. Is this going to be a Disney classic? I have my doubts!
