O Canada! (1982)
Dopey, dated, and cliché.
I'm sure this was one of those "WOAH!" attractions in 1982 when Epcot opened, but now it's just silly. The film's message is cliché. The Circle-Vision is disorienting. And that awful song at the end is grating. And I really wish they'd install seats. After so much walking, all you want to do is sit down for a few minutes. And when you hear there's a film to see it sounds pretty glamorous! You get entertained while sitting down, right? WRONG! You're standing there for 18+ minutes leaning against a short little railing. Disney should make a newer Maelstrom like attraction to liven things up and replace this dull, lackluster film. NOT FUN. Skip it. In fact, skip Canada altogether unless you're eating there. Move directly to the United Kingdom.
High School Musical (2006)
Stop bashing HSM!
HSM is campy, corny, cheesy, predictable, and VERY standard Disney Channel material. BUT, it still rocks. Great dancing, great songs, great overall mood. This is SUCH a break from those awful DCOM's like Go Figure!
The songs are fantastic. They differ in style and have great choreography to match them. The acting was decent for a DCOM, so I'm not complaining there, except for Zac Efron.
So, honestly, give this one a chance please. It is very entertaining.
Oh, and if you want to bash anyone, bash Zac Efron. He is such a nerd. And girls faint over him like he's talented or something...
Anyway, great movie.
3.5 / 4 stars
The Education of Little Tree (1997)
Morally Unsound
The Education of Little Tree is just not as good as it could have been. Little Tree's education is about things like the circle of life and how you should look at a star to help you. Whatever happened to the three R's? Readin' 'Ritin' and 'Rithmetic? When the idiot back talks the teacher at the boarding school place he starts crying and talking to the sky. Oh my gosh. Sure, the lady was a little harsh, but then James Cromwell's character comes and takes him away, leaving the audience thinking that Little Tree was absolutely right. He should learn to adapt to new discipline. Those were the times! Talking to a star is not going to change a thing! Little Tree needs to learn that his adoring guardians are not always right.
Fat Albert (2004)
Highly Enjoyable! Flawed, but Enjoyable!
Fat Albert, released December 25th, 2004, is released by 20th Century Fox. It is rated PG by the MPAA for momentary language and is directed by Joel Zwick (My Big Fat Greek Wedding).
Fat Albert, the live-action adaptation of the Bill Cosby television show, explores what might happen if Fat Albert, Mush Mouth, Dumb Donald, and the rest of his problem-solving gang were supernaturally crammed through the TV screen and landed in our "real" world. The journey begins when a lonely and friendless teenager named Doris' tear falls into the remote control of the television set. That's all it takes to summon Fat Albert's want to help people with their problems! He (with some difficulty) hoists himself through the screen and drags the rest of his somewhat unwilling friends with him. Doris, amazed and terrified, helps her odd visitors find their way through this new world before the next time their cartoon show comes on. Amidst all the new inventions and places that Fat Albert and his gang discover (e.g. the mall), they still won't rest until Doris has a friend. But, alas, their innocence and charm won't do them much except make it worse in this century! Realizing this, Albert convinces Doris to come to one of the cheerleader's birthday parties. Doris makes known her hate of parties, but tries to make the best of it. When Doris is embarrassed at the party, she is sure that she has no problem and does not need Fat Albert. Her foster sister, Lori, is falling in love with Albert, but who does she have?
That's not the end. Fat Albert is determined to be with Lori, solve Doris' problem, and get back to his TV show before he turns to dust! This movie's sweet ending and hilarious humor will leave you in tears!
Although this movie is funny, it took some time to start up. One thing that bothered me was the advertisement for the boxed set of Fat Albert DVD's that appears briefly in the film. The setting and storyline isn't terribly different from many Disney shows and Family movies now. It is almost scary how much it resembled Space Jam, starring Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan, though it has considerably more charm. It may be a hair too long (1 hour 40 minutes) for some moviegoers, but all in all is a great movie that doesn't meddle with the show it's based on!
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
Great dark movie
This movie is quite Tim Burton-esquire. As fan of the cleverly written books I am happy to say that even though there were a few variations in the plot it has the same sophisticated feel of the series on which it is based. The differences in plot were actually enjoyable and supported the film.
Jim Carrey is funny and maybe a little creepy as the arrogant villain of the movie, Count Olaf, and unlike his performance in The Grinch he was goofy but not in-your-face and over the top and all that. The three Baudelaire orphans Violet (Emily Browning), Klaus (Liam Aiken), and Sunny (twin toddlers Kara and Shelby Hoffman) were quite good actors especially the babies who spoke with hilarious subtitles.
This movie has funny dark situations and a star-studded cast. This movie is good for kids 8 and up and isn't too scary or violent. The sets, costumes, props and special effects are mind-blowing. If your a fan of the books don't expect it to be exactly like the original story, just be happy with it a movie alone.
The Princess Bride (1987)
Excelling in comedy, pun, plot, and action! A masterpiece!
This is one of those movies that you go into not knowing what to expect. Fortunately, you will be satisfied in every aspect with this little action/romance/comedy movie! There's swordplay for the action guru, a fairy tale-like love story for the romance moviegoer, and gags and dialog you'll never forget for the comedian. The Princess Bride will appeal to both kids and adults alike. It has non-graphic mild violence and a torture scene. The acting is superb, the stunts are very believable, and the story is charming. All in all, this movie is such a classic, you are guaranteed to never get bored, no matter if it's your first time watching, or your hundredth!
