Reviews
Kingpin (2003)
A major flop. A tragedy.
Kingpin has some of the worst writing of this genre. The dialogue is insipid. How the critics compared this miniseries to the Sopranos or even Shakespeare is unbelievable. For a superior show watch The Shield. I hope they do not pick up this series and reward utter dreck. Obviously studio hacks are giving this show the great reviews.
The Tailor of Panama (2001)
Classic Spy Thriller
I wish LeCarre's book was as good as this film. Not for action film fans. Much more complex than a James Bond Film. Satirical, smart, well-plotted thriller. Much better than the recent Bourne identity. I will watch it again.
A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966)
Realistic and a must see. "Stingesque"
I find it amazing that so many professed non-gamblers found this film unrealistic. Excellent cast and in my long list of films I watch every time it is on. For fans of poker films, sting films, etc. The film is an obvious progenitor of the genre.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Typical Hollywood Fare
I did not like this film. Controversies aside 'Beautiful Mind in simply Hollywood typical fare. Bland white bread. Two hours of dull story line with a weepy/happy fifteen minute ending. I could not forgive nor forget the former just because the latter is tagged on. Another example of disabilities equalling OSCAR! Crowe has not been in a good film since L.A. Confidential which was itself a low brow Usual Suspects. Instead watch Connelly's more notable performance in Requiem for a Dream. Crowe you appear to be good actor - talk to your agent about these hack films including Gladiator.
Sexy Beast (2000)
Try close captioning
Stand out performances by Kingsley, McShane and Winstone. Mcshane certainly sheds his Lovejoy persona deftly. With these performances who needs a story. Ostensibly a 'heist' film Beast transcends the genre relegating the caper to the back burner. For those that cannot make out the dialogue two words - 'close captioning'. I am hard of hearing and use this feature with all videos, dvds or sat. broadcasts regardless of language or dialect. Some theater releases now use subtitles in UK films. Also an excellent way to decipher the lyrics of film songs which are otherwise completely missed.
