Zombieverse (2023)
Suspension Of Belief Died In The First Episode
Every character, zombies included, had a radio and battery pack on the back of their belt visible throughout the entire show. It makes sense the main characters, thinking they were on a TV show at the start, may have had an excuse to wear one but the zombies? How did the main characters not see and comment on that?
Most characters were wearing a jacket or something baggie to try and hide it, but when you watch the so-called zombies stretching, trying to reach someone on top of a car, they were clearly visible.
I wanted to believe and get sucked into the story but couldn't find any way to invest in this show once I saw that. I can't go higher than 2/10 = cringey!
Queer as Folk (2022)
Tries A Little Too Hard...
The original UK series from 1999 was ground breaking but this, is a bit of a hot mess in comparison. It's like the production is demanding that every letter of the alphabet, and every colour of the rainbow be squished into each and every episode. There are more stereotypes than you can poke a stick at. Have the makers of this show ever heard the phrase, less is more?
The Triangle (2005)
Worse Than A High School Project
The first thing that comes to mind is the word erratic. The scenes definitely don't flow very well and the number of cliches and stereotypes in almost all scenes make this feel very amateurish. Secret service type guys in an underwater base wear suits and ties and manhandle people like riot police. None of which is helped by very poor CGI even for 2005. I give this 3/10 which I classify as " Obvious fail on a lot of levels".
Destruction Los Angeles (2017)
For a low budget movie, the editing is pretty awesome.
I have to be honest, i'm a junky for low budget films in the schi-fi, post-apocalyptic and dystopian genres but I have to say, when they don't have the big names stars and a zillion dolars for CGI (which always helps) but I find that with a small "suspension of belief" I can usually look past the bigger flaws and hapily enjoy what's been made.
Yes, some of the actors suck (and blow!) especially the son who played such a vague charcter I didn't know if he was meant to be playing someone with a disability or not, but it was the editing that captured my notice.
Most small budget films don't have the abiltiy to shoot extended sequences in chronological daylight order due to time and budget constraints. But compared with the latest Transformers movie (that whole chapter at the farm when the feds arrive) and the daylight goes from early morning, to late afternon to midday sun all within a minute it was so confusing!
The editing in this film however, (despite the corny ending), somehow became the star of the show in a way I haven't noticed before with other low budget films.
If you're going to watch it for the first time, just keep that in the back of your mind and see if i'm right. I couldn't edit a movie if my life depended on it but, i'm pretty sure I can spot it when it's done right.
That's my 2 cents.
Terrordactyl (2016)
A Very Pleasant Surprise
I love the arts and I love how arty people go out of their way to do something, anything, to tell us a story. To make us laugh, cry or scream. And I really like how they don't care what their budget is.
Sure, there's heaps of Indy movies and cheap movies on low budgets but I will say, for something labelled "action/comedy"? it delivered.
I was surprised the CGI was as good as it was. In fact I was impressed. Maybe the big thingy was a little B grade CGI-wise but the jokes were think and fast and it was obvious the actors were having a great time. They all seemed to fit together well.
My only real peeve is continuity in daylight shots. I get confused when people are running with short little shadows (shot at midday) and then their shadows are like 20 feet long (shot late afternoon or early morning!) then they change again but that's a personal thing. My hubby says he didn't notice so I guess it's okay.
If you're a snob and hate any kind of B grade movie then don't bother seeing this. If however you like seeing something done at its best by people who appear to be doing everything they can with what they have even if it's a tad Indy, then this is worth more than a few laughs. I'm really glad I bought the DVD.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
A very unexpected and entertaining movie.
Genreally, I like zombie movies a lot because of their post- apocalyptic vibe.
Normally though, I find the genre comes in 2 distinct flavours; serious stuff like "28 Days/Weeks Later" or campy B flavoured offerings like "The Scouts Guide To The Apocalypse".
This movie however defies the genre. The closest comparisons I could make would be "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" or "Penny Dreadful" but with more humour. It follows the story of Pride and Prejudice so closely I kept looking for Keira Knightly to appear.
The production quality however is what surprised me the most; it's incredibly high with great sets, realistic costumes, lighting and cinematography. There was a lot of attention to detail.
This is a very unique and interesting mash-up which I quite enjoyed. I am surprised it's not rated higher on IMDb but I believe it deserves a watch regardless.
The 4400 (2004)
An enjoyable watch either way!
I live for my sci-fi and have watched this series from start to finish. The story is based on the fact that 4400 people have disappeared over time. Apparently abducted by aliens. But then they reappear again. How do they cope when they get back? How will the world cope with them? The premise is brilliant and it *WILL* be an enjoyable and easy watch but unfortunately, I think the show completely suffered from a serious lack of directorial input. The writers have done an excellent job inter-twining the storyline between good returnee/bad returnee, good government guys/bad government guys all whilst remaining true to the basic tenant of the series and whilst I loved the show and signed the petition for it's return, I can't be surprised that it was dropped. The actors try *SO* hard to perform their roles but their characters vary so remarkably from episode to episode that it seems somewhat disjointed. Just who is truly good and bad becomes terribly blurred on both sides, I am really surprised that it lasted as long as it did. For sci-fi fans and those who would like to explore the fantastic underlying storyline, it's definitely a must see but it's a shame that the powers that were didn't define the roles within the storyline better otherwise we could have had a show to be truly proud of.
