Eragon (2006)

My son says it stinks
7 September 2007
I haven't read the book, and after watching the film with my son (who read it alright) I'm not going to. My son adored the book, which is the first part of a trilogy, but was deeply disappointed of the movie. I guess that after three fantastic Lord of the Rings motion pictures, one's threshold has reached saturation. But I'll be honest with you, this film does stink. It's as if it was made and edited back in the early 80s--jumpy plot, horrible special effects and actors who should go back to school and study the basics again. Even in the 80s there were much better fantasy films, like for instance The Never Ending Story or Dune (or even The Highlander) where you could be immersed easily by the scenery and be swept away to another colorful world. My suggestion to young readers, read Eragon and then go find Michael Moorcock's Elric books to understand what dragons are all about. Yet, stay away from this monstrosity!

The Vexxer (2007)

It's utterly Mad
19 August 2007
It's quite a refreshing mad comedy coming from Germany. I never thought the Germans and the English would ever come together in a comedy. The music theme is fantastic. I mostly liked the use of Madness hit songs (also in Der Wixxer!) and the new NW5 which is truly a classic. Neues vom Wixxer has a bit of everything really: a bit of the Pink Pather,a wink at James Bond and a twist of Kafka's Angel of Death. It quite reminds me of the way they did those old films in the 60s. It wasn't about complicated computer graphics but rather some good acting and a genuine plot.

Nice touch there.
