You fill in the blanks
16 June 2024
A great film maker leaves room for the viewer to bring their own experiences to the film. By doing so, the viewer connects with the movie on a personal level. However, this film wasn't made for me. I just never had the experiences that are portrayed. I couldn't connect to any of the characters. The two main characters were extremely boring to me. Everything moves very slowly and there is no real resolution to any of the storylines. It was well made and looks terrific. I really liked the music too. At the core of the movie, the writers had a few good ideas but nothing is every fully developed. This movie never connected with me but if you were the age of the characters in the 90s and felt socially isolated then maybe this movie is for you.

Depressing Family Drama
11 April 2024
This is the third film I have seen recently where the viewer get a first hand account of a serial killer. The Clovehitch Killer (2018) explores the relationship of a father who is a serial killer and a son who becomes aware of it. The Transfiguration (2017) tells the story of an inner city black teenage who is a serial killer and thinks he is a vampire. All these films are dramas with elements of horror to them. Both the Transfiguration and Found are depressing studies in bullying and social isolation. Both are low budget with tolerable acting. They stick in your mind well after the credits roll but I didn't love either of them. If you want a really great movie that explores this subject in a more subtle and complex manner then I suggest that you try out the Clovehitch Killer.

Tuna fish ice cream sandwich
8 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I like a tuna sandwich. I like ice cream. I don't think I would like a tuna fish ice cream sandwich. That's what this movie is like. One part of it wants to be a movie like Candy Man. A conjuring of an evil entity that comes to kill everyone. The other part wants to explore the existential dread of a cult formed around an unknowable alien mind of ancient power. Half of the story was interesting to me. The Lovecraft part of the story drew me in and I wanted more understanding of that world. The other part was stupid and obvious. The film really breaks down in the final part where all the flashbacks are revealed to be implants by the cult. Sorry- that makes no sense in any way. Much like the movie The Void, this film is long in atmosphere and short in story telling. Not terrible but never lives up to it's potential.

Deeper than you might think

This film was a total surprise. The acting is terrific, fun crazy dialogue and super cinematography. The movie explores race, politics, loneliness and media responsibilities. It feels natural and, despite the heaviness of the themes, still managed to make me laugh out loud in parts. The characters are multifaceted and played well.

The character of Duncan Plump is compelling. I can see why the movie was originally going to be called simply, "Duncan." My only quibble with the movie was the very end. I didn't feel like the last few minutes matched the tone of the overall film. Go into this one with an open mind and you won't be disappointed.

An amazing film
8 August 2023
This is one of the best films I have seen in years. I am a big fan of Philip K. Dick and many of his concepts are used in the movie. Elements of Ubik, A Scanner Darkly, and the Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch are present in the film. It's design is beautiful and the absurdity of it is wonderful. Not a film that everyone would like- if you want a block buster superhero film then this not your movie. If you want a visually interesting movie that is innovative and startlingly original then you may want to watch this. The care taken creating this world can be seen and heard in every frame. Did I mention what a fantastic job the lead actor does? He is compelling on screen. I have watched it several times and it gets better every time. I am going to watch the writer director's earlier film Crumbs- hopefully as interesting as Jesus shows you the way to the highway.
