Between Us (2021)
A hard-hitting movie about the psychological trauma of bad upbringing, drug addiction and abortion
"Between Us" is a Ukrainian movie about how a toxic upbringing in childhood can destroy adult lives.
It also shows the problem of war, drug addiction and abortion. The genre can be described as a mix of thriller and drama. The plot is fast-paced and you won't get bored while watching the film. Because the events develop quickly and dynamically. And it keeps you in the story until the very end of the film.
The cinematography and lighting are in line with the latest trends, and look a bit like the picture of the TV series Euphoria.
As a Ukrainian-speaker, I was able to feel all the insight of the acting, the script and the local "Easter eggs". I have no idea how this will be adapted in the English track. But in Ukrainian it's great.
I am also impressed that the movie is very good for its budget, which was even less than half a million dollars. I am inspired by the fact that Ukrainian cinema and Ukrainian culture are alive and breathing despite the difficult challenges!
It's also worth noting that it's probably not recommended for the sensitive people.
Dovbush (2023)
An anti-feudal blockbuster with a Ukrainian flavor.
The story of Oleksa Dovbush is the story of a man in a feudal system. And moreover, this feudal system was made worse by the fact that the territory of Ukraine was occupied by Poland. In this story, the injustice of the lords towards ordinary peasants, oppression, humiliation, and all this provokes resistance. And this resistance in the film takes on a blockbuster scale.
The film is in some aspects similar to Quentin Tarantino's films, and echoes the story of Robin Hood. The plot develops dynamically. The acting is at a decent level. There are some questions about the performance of the mainstream actors.
A nice advantage of the film is that it was not made in Hollywood, which makes it unique, devoid of clichés.
This is a great film to learn a little more about Ukrainian culture and the suffering of this people throughout their difficult history.
Let It Snow (2020)
I liked that this is not a formulaic film
You know those clichéd movies from Hollywood, when you sit and know exactly what will happen in the next frame, and you almost always guess all the standard roles of the heroes? This is absolutely not the case here. I didn't guess anything. Yes, the movie is a bit long. But it is realistic enough, psychologically difficult and scary enough. I liked it. Ivanna played the role perfectly, she managed to convince me that she could die. I also liked the scenery of the place, I can imagine how difficult it was to shoot in the mountains!
Therefore, I will give the maximum rating, because I want more non-standard and non-cliché films.
