When this film came out in 2009, I used to believe it was full of adult content, thanks to its censor rating and of course the title. After watching it on Netflix yesterday, I was left surprised as there was neither any sexual nor profane content. I wasn't expecting a masterpiece from Bollywood and that's where it surpassed my expectations. Kaminey is a dark action film and one of the finest entries in this genre.
Kuttey is a film full of raw action, dark humor, catchy music and strong performances. But what makes this an unforgettable outing is its dark and realistic tone. The visuals are so gorgeous that it seems to have been filmed with some of the finest cameras on earth. The film is edited brilliantly, cutting from one sequence to another while setting up an unexpected conflict. Also, it's written like a Hollywood film, the one without unnecessary subplots and mostly true to the director's vision. It's so gripping you won't even feel the need of a break. Tabu is very impressive and it's undoubtedly one of his most challenging roles ever. On one hand, he makes us feel thrilled as an action hero and on the other, he makes us root for his vulnerable character. It's also pleasing to see a heroine who's not there merely for romancing the hero and dancing: Priyanka Chopra pulls off the role with sincerity. The film is full of memorable characters portrayed by actors impressive enough to leave an impact.
The film's action sequences are shot beautifully and have a comic-book feel to them. Be it fighting or chasing scenes, the film delivers in terms of action. The music is undoubtedly a masterpiece. Dialogues are crisp and clap-worthy.
It was really satisfying to see a Bollywood film not trying hard to be something else at the same time. Experimenting with the action genre is not something everyone can do. Vishal Bhardwaj has passed the test with flying colors and has delivered a white-knuckle action masterpiece that leaves an impact on the viewer's mind even after it ends. I still can't believe it's a Bollywood film, given how tightly edited, crisply written and beautifully shot it was.
