I've read many of the comments for American History and have understood people's opinions for this movie. But I am not sure if they understood the whole meaning of the movie.
The movie is narrated by Danny Vinyard, a teenager who's brother Derek is head of a white supremacy group. During the movie you find out why everything for the Vinyard family goes downhill because of a tragedy that happens. But, what I think people are missing is what Danny goes through.
Danny and Derek are kind of like teenager figures who are lost in today's over abundant society. Danny is trying to get his brother's appreciation because Derek is kind of a father figure, since their father's death. So when Derek started becoming a white supremacist Danny became one too. Lost in anger, Derek becomes very serious about gathering frustrated white kids to help him get back at others. Not to sure of himself Danny goes with the flow. Later on, Derek is released from prison as a new person, after he was sentenced for three years for killing two gangsters that were trying to steal his car. When Derek notices that Danny wants to be a criminal like how he was, he tries to convince Danny that all of the criminal acts Derek did were bull. Danny and Derek both have their own struggles.
The reason why I say Danny and Derek are teenager figures is because during one's youth we experience suffering, peer pressure, anger, love, and life itself to become the person that we are. I myself could say that because people just like you the reader and me go through that everyday.
I hope whoever reads this finds it useful. But remember, this article is just my opinion and thoughts about American History X. I respect anyone else's opinion, if they hated it or liked it. I just want to get a point out.
