Pera Palas'ta Gece Yarisi (2022)
Love it... make season 2 now please!
I've watched the same 8 episodes four or five times already...a few times in English, but I prefer the original Turkish. It was also more fun to hear Halit and Esra speak a bit of English to George rather than the dubbed actors. :) I hope a second season is not too far away!
I love period pieces typically anyway, and I thought this one was very well done and enjoyable. The mystery kept my interest. I thought the actors were great. Halit kept me guessing for a while there... and wow, is he ever sexy.. *fans self* Acting though.. evet, he is quite good at that. Even when you're just watching his face, he is performing wonderfully. I've seen this actor in just two things now, and I'm definitely a fan.
Esra and Ahmet made a good team. The costumes and music were great overall. By the end of season one, I turned right around and watched it all for the second time because I wanted to watch it knowing all I had learned. The last few episodes are pretty explosive...
It can't be stressed enough... this NEEDS SEASON TWO ASAP.
Velvet (2013)
Gimme a break
I really like a star-crossed, forbidden love type story, but in this case, the way they're being kept apart is just not working for me... I don't have sympathy for the leading lady!
Poor, poor Ana sacrificing her happiness... oh AND the happiness of her true love, Alberto--by forcing him to be with someone else! So yes, she's harming another person caught up in her lies--Cristina, AKA the useful cash cow. Alberto is a schmuck for going along with it, but Ana makes me sick.
The scene where she talks to Uncle Emilio about how she's not selfish because it was her idea to save the store and their jobs... I'm sorry, but it's just not good enough for me. She is doing way too much WRONG for this to be the right thing. The person she loves most is suffering because of her, an innocent woman is tricked into a relationship with someone she actually loves, and by the way, they're cheating behind her back while doing this NOBLE sacrificing... and I am supposed to feel bad about Ana's suffering? I don't... lol... so the series is failing for me there, and I feel like that's a pretty big failure.
The main characters being so insistent on NOT being together (Ana really) is frustrating and ridiculous. I am casually continuing to watch because there are many other things happening and good points about the series... but the main woman drives me nuts.
Positives: the time period and costumes, Alberto is hotttt and oh-so-dreamy, lots of romance to go around.

Weird premise, some good characters
I don't love or hate this series. I found the premise silly to begin with, but I kept watching. Nescet is basically a cartoon. The relationship between the teachers and students was strange to me. But, it's TV, so... suspend your disbelief!
The love story that developed with Burcu and Kemal was not awful even though Burcu annoyed me during some of it. Kemal really grew on me during the show.
With the five teens, I struggled to find a lot of sympathy for Kerem in the early episodes. He improved some, but I wasn't a huge fan. Isik and Eda were both okay. Sinan had the best storyline. He was able to tug at my heartstrings, although I really wish he didn't hide things so much through the series from the friends he gained. Osman was easily my favorite. There was just something endearing and charming about that guy. (I think I have a bias for this actor though.. haha) That leads to a huge problem in season two for me though... Elif. Freaking Elif. I'm sorry, but Elif was a terrible and annoying character. She comes in for the second season to be a love interest for Osman apparently, and while the Osman actor certainly pulled his weight for the story (his initial obliviousness and his love sickness were both adorable), the Elif character just felt blah for me. I think I was supposed to root for them, of course, but all I could think was that Osman could do better. She did not endear herself to me in the initial scenes, and I never grew to like her. And they ruined the hazelnuts for Elif!? Freaking Elif!
I also hated the older versions of the characters. I wish they had just let the original actors have different hair and make them look older---the actors are older than teenagers anyway. Again, this series was just okay for me, but I kept watching for Osman, Sinan, the teachers they set up, and even Eda sometimes.
