Gripping and thought-provoking
11 April 2024
Don't understand how anyone could watch this, particularly in our current political climate, and not pick up on the ominous threat and very real message of what could actually be.

The six main characters are all excellent and perfectly portray their flawed generational / social stereotypes. The symbolism is thought provoking and after a second swift viewing in the space of one week I can see even more in it. I love the use of the deer and there is much to be taken from that, likewise the thread of Friends running through it. Amazing. It is the watch of 2024 so far for me, and I'll be giving it a third viewing soon.

In parts amusing, terrifying, gripping and compelling. One to keep in mind for sure.

Pure Joy!

I do not know how anyone can claim this show to be poor in anyway. As a fan of the books and previously of the original film and subsequent BBC series I am as sure as I am of anything that this version is almost the best. Pure heart warming joy, delightful scenery, quality acting and great chemistry between the ensemble cast. The latest series has elevated itself with some real emotional moments not previously seen e.g. Mrs Hall's personal saga and the imminent arrival of war and a young couple broken apart. I've thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm delighted to read it has been given the green light for two more seasons! Happy days!

A traditional delight!

What is not to like here? A delightful period gem with some top quality actors in the billing - including the magnificent Miriam Margoyles. I absolutely love Dan Stevens, he has an exquisite way of presenting himself, with a hint of twinkle! Loved the storyline of how the classic characters of "A Christmas Carol" came to be, really very interesting and, if true, an insight into the author of whom I didn't know much before. I adored the little quirks and references, such as the policeman called Copperfield. Beautiful film set as well, seemed like a quality production. It has certainly entertained me on a wintery evening infront of the fire and the Christmas tree and got me nicely in the mood for the festive season. Will definitely watch again.

A classy bit a drama man

What a compelling drama, thoroughly interesting. I only stumbled across it after hearing the ghostly tale of Mary Ann on a history tour in Durham city. I grew up in the village from where she is claimed to originate and yet had never heard of her. Joanne Frogatt and Alun Armstrong have strong performances and I very much enjoyed the rest of the cast and the wonderful locations including the North East coastline and liberal use of our amazing Beamish Open Air Museum. An unknown and under rated tale of mystery brought to life, I would have only liked to know more behind her rationale but it seems little is really known of her, with limited written records for the rural mining community of the time I suppose it's no wonder. And also makes you question how many other "Mary Ann's" got away with similar crimes!!?
