Gran Torino (2008)
Great Clint Eastwood, and that's about it.
The 4 stars are solely for Eastwood's performance, which was top notch as usual. He is like a fine wine, he only gets better.... As for the rest of the movie, a couple of other reviewers have nailed it, but the multitude of people that gave it anywhere from 9 to 10 stars saw a different movie from me. The rest of the acting in the movie is honestly the worst I can remember seeing in a movie. There are times when there is maybe one actor in a movie who is not very polished, but in this movie, there are actor after actor, scene after scene, where aside, from Clint, I thought I was watching a middle school production. And it wasn't ONLY the acting. The dialogue for a large part of the movie was also very forced, unrealistic, and staged. Not great writing here folks. There are a few rewarding moments, and again, Clint's acting and character are superb, but that is not enough to recommend this amateurish, predictable, and pretty unrealistic movie.
Fireproof (2008)
A great movies for married couples.
I loved this movie. I had low expectations because of the nature of it, but I was blown away. The message is very powerful. It is a very redeeming and inspirational story, and it was so refreshing to be able to hear open Christian dialogue in a movie on the big screen. I won't go deep into the plot, but I will say that it worked for me. There were a couple of surprises, but overall it is straightforward. Still, it worked for me. I enjoyed the characters, most of the dialogue, and the message. The message is the heart of this story. Just the fact that this couple is able to rescue their marriage from the trash heap is inspirational. How many times have you seen this type of story in Hollywood? Not very often. Kudos for this message. The salvation of the marriage definitely has a Christian belief system basis, but if that is all you can see and allow that to ruin the movie, that is just too bad. There is plenty of good advice on marriage throughout the movie, whether you are a Christian or not. I really appreciated that the film addressed problems like pornography addiction, which tears marriages apart regularly, Christian and non-Christian alike. I am a big movie-goer, and though I would never compare this movie to mainstream Hollywood fare, because it would be an unfair comparison on most accounts, it definitely measures up in the heart and emotional aspects. Great job to the folks who made this movie! And on such a small budget. Please keep up the great work! I know a lot of people have panned this movie because of it's Christian message, and because of production and/or acting levels. To those people, I say that this is a movie that targeted a select audience, and in this day and age, if you walk into a movie not knowing anything about it, you only have yourselves to blame for that. I would never watch any of the Saw franchise movies, because seeing people tortured and suffering is not what I think of as entertainment. Likewise, if you don't want to to see a movie made on a shoestring budget, that has a strong Christian message, than avoid this movie.
