Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Inescapable (2019)
Best ep!!
If you're not a Fitzsimmons fan, then I totally get this may not be your cup of tea. But if you're not a Fitzsimmons fan, then quite frankly I don't understand it, and this episode is proof! These two characters and their relationship is probably my favourite aspect to this show, other than the general found family vibes. This episode perfectly sums up everything that makes these characters so compelling - broken and traumatised, but fighting for love and hope (all the while bickering like an old married couple).
Yes, the plot is basically halted for this entire episode, but who was that interested in the plot for this season anyway? (Rewatching, I basically skipped through most of season 6, and this was the only episode I watched and enjoyed fully.) And with how complicated the whole Fitz-married-Jemma-but-died-so-she-found-an-earlier-version-of-him situation is, there has to be some kind of plot pause for Fitz's character to deal with learning all this, and this episode does it beautifully.
Hilarious, charming, emotional; this episode balances all of these without ruining the tone at all. Iain and Elizabeth are FABULOUS here - truly at their best - and little Jemma is adorable (that first gasp from Fitz at 7 year old Jemma cracks me up every time). Altogether, one of the best AOS episodes and one of my favourites!
Once Upon a Time (2011)
Fav show of all time!
If you read the bad reviews, you'll probably realise that the main problem of the show is season 7. But if you ignore that season (think of it as basically a spin-off show), this show is an absolute masterpiece!
I will admit, the CGI is poor, and some of the plot lines get a little overcomplicated. But this is easily overlooked by the overall heart of the show. The themes of hope and love may seem cheesy, but really, who doesn't love a happy ending? The show isn't ashamed to be happy, and it's actually very refreshing in a time where shows feel the need to constantly get darker.
I'm trying to avoid spoilers here (even though I'm insanely late to review this, and quite frankly it's probably unnecessary) so I'll just add that I love all of the characters, and their relationships, particularly the slightly more unconventional ones! (Like Belle and her friendship with a certain pirate in later seasons!)
This is my favourite show of all time, and I would very much recommend!
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Terrible idea, BRILLIANT execution
The idea: combine two completely different book series that exist in the same universe, and have no more than 3 side characters that overlap. The result: several plot lines that don't really fit together, but they'll try to convince you that they do. Plus, mixing the powerful magic of Shadow and Bone, with the clever but simple criminals of Six of Crows ends up unfortunately losing some of the stakes of magic, as I ended up wondering if magic was even needed.
That being said, I LOVED this show, and felt it captured the books really well.
Casting? PERFECTION. Acting? Phenomenal. The actors perfectly embodied the characters, and had great chemistry. Costume/set design? Beautiful. Dialogue? Nice blend of dark/intense, and fun/witty. Character creation and worldbuilding is also top-notch, but I feel the credit should go to the wonderful Leigh Bardugo.
Altogether, really worth the watch. Especially if a fan of the books. Can't wait for season 2!
