Age of Iron (2021)
The Horror!
The Age of Iron is certainly one of the best independent poetic documentary films I have watched recently.
The filmmaker's budget friendly Go-pro action camera takes you upon a journey through quite a few countries in Asia; from Japan to India, exploring the ancient lands and cultures all in the age when Iron is but an inclusive symbol of what the colonialism of the late capital and post capitalist global economy has ironically brought to them as gift or perhaps in the name of charity. The fast pace of the poetically observative narrative together with the rhythmic montage between both long and short shots leave little time for the viewer to pause as the film carries on to deal with the common dystopic issues of our market economy life style in both the developed/developing and yet to be fully exploited countries. Through the loss of the self, identity, culture, hope even in its illusory scheme (such as religion) and through the wars and exploitation of man and land, the film carries us from the mountain peaks of despair to the slavery of Buddha in the heart of the earth. The Age of Iron leaves us with many questions about the current world order on a planet fatigued with exploitation, greed and "the horror."*
*reference to "The horror!" in Josef Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
