Captive Audience (2022)
Real People
This wasn't the best true crime documentary but it gave us a look at a real family that survived hellish circumstances only to be hit one more time with a media avalanche and another tragedy. I saw the made for TV movie and I finally heard from the family that they weren't portrayed in the most accurate light but they were happy their story was told. Most people know who Steven is and what Cary did but I don't think anyone can really know what the impact of those events had on the members of the family. I see what the director asked the actors who portrayed Steven and Cary to step in and read excerpts from the interviews. It's a little off-putting at first but with the absence of those key people it keeps the viewer involved in the story instead of cutting to a still picture of the individual. I feel this could have been more involved but I asked away with a deep respect for Mrs. Staynor and her strength.
Shameless: Father Frank, Full of Grace (2021)
Surprisingly Emotional
I just got around to watching the final episode of Shameless and I found it incredibly emotional. Ian and Mickey dealt with the real trauma that Terry left behind. Frank's last thoughts were if his children and his wife. The writers mercifully let Frank pass away from Covid. There was the possibility of taking the easy way out and having him die from drugs or alcohol but I think this was a much more timely and compassionate ending. None of the Gallagher's really got a "happily ever after" but there was a definite finality to the family. I already miss them.
And Just Like That... (2021)
Harsh Critics
I went into this reboot with low expectations. I was just as shocked as everyone else when Big died in the first episode but I persevered. I thought it was great to peek into Carrie and the rest of the girl's lives post Covid. I was pleasantly surprised how they handled the exit of Kim Cattrell's Samantha. It was graceful and left an open door for a possible reunion at a later date. The kids, Brady, Lilly, Rose, didn't disappoint. I am a little over the need for every new show to have a non-binary character but it works with Rock. Charlotte is the one character who has to continue to grow due to her daughter's self discovery. I am disappointed that the ride is almost over.
