Severance (2022)
Creative but dragging too much
I am going to be a contrarian. Finished the whole 9 episodes. Creative writing is great and cinematography is impressive, but as a story, it is very very very long drawn. The whole thing could have fit in one episode and then it would have been a 10/10. But the way it stands, its just dragging a dead horse ad infinitum.
They are running the same location a 1000 times, and there are just so many repetitions and slow moving scenes that I had to forward most of the story at 2x to 4x.
I mean I am not against slow moving tv shows. I love some of them but when the story doesn't move at all, and the same ideas are repeated, its not just slow. It is lazy.
All the actors have done a great job though.
I understand I am in a minority here and I am surprised at that because generaly my view is close to the general imdb reviewer.
Shantaram (2022)
A magnum opus
This would go in history as a classic - along with the likes of Gandhi and Lawrence of Arabia. The story line is epic - spanning continents and lives in early 80s.
The show has beautifully captured the slum life and the multi-cultural mixing pot of Bombay where people from all countries mingle - some come to have fun, some for business and yet some come to get absorbed in the vast underworld of crime.
It capture the wonder that is India (or at least a few facets of it) from the eyes of a foreigner who falls in love with it.
With its slum life and sepia tone, it is not for everyone, but if you liked the novel, you will most likely enjoy the series.
Maggie (2022)
Very well made show
Great acting, dialogues, script, actors. There is not a single thing bad about this show. It is about longing, loneliness and being socially misfit but it is also about love, friendship, and partying. It is such a perfect arrangement of everything emotional, funky and quirky.
I fully enjoyed it and finished in 2 days.
Deducting one point for long meandering in unnecessary stories once in a while.
The Secret: Dare to Dream (2020)
If it seems like the title of a Dale Carnegie book...
...You won't be surprised when you watch it. It is basically a fable about the power of positive thinking. The acting is good and the story is moving just enough so that you can watch the whole thing, like I did, if you are insistant. But it is a very plain and simple movie. Could have been a 30 minute short. The story is incredulous and silly. Not a single character is bad. A stereotypical people where everyone is nice and the worst thing to happen is that the woman has to break the engagement with the fiance because she doesn't love him.
Guess it is not too bad, just keep your expectations low.
