Maa Oori Polimera 2 (2023)
Joyride with suspension of disbelief!
Maa Oori Polimera 2 would become a cult cinema. It will leave you spellbound. The film's narrative is not just tight; it's an intricate web of storytelling that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Blink, and you might miss a plot twist! The pacing is racy and intense; it feels like a relentless thrill ride, with every moment brimming with intrigue and excitement. Since the movie is rooted in black magic and witchcraft, viewers are better served when they suspend their disbelief while the story unfolds and enjoy the ride! After all, there is no logic to black magic!
One of the standout features of this film is how the characters cahnge their shades. They respond to the context they operate, which the viewer can easily relate. You'll find yourself emotionally invested in their journey, which is an evidence of the effective storytelling.
Dr. Anil Viswanath, the director, has shown remarkable craftsmanship in his work. He weaves a tapestry of visuals and emotions. Dr. Anil Viswanath is undoubtedly a director to watch out for.
The technical aspects aspects of the film - the Director of Photography (DOP) in this film deserves special mention. His keen eye for composition and lighting plays a pivotal role in creating the movie's atmosphere. The visuals are stunning, and every frame, particularly during the scenes of witchcraft is an improbable work of art.
The background musical score by Gyaani is haunting lingers in your mind long after the credits roll. It is a bundle of emotions that elevates the film. The music is more than just a backdrop; it's a character in itself. It intensified the drama, underlined the suspense, and tugs at your heartstrings in all the right places. The song sung by Penchal Das is a welcome addition and provides a welcome relief from hectic activity of the film.
I liked the editing of this film. The seamless transitions and well-paced sequences keep you engaged throughout. It's evident that a meticulous hand was at work here, ensuring that the story flows smoothly, and the twists and turns are perfectly timed.
The cast deserves an applause for their credible performances. Each actor embodies their character to perfection and goes beyond expectations. The lead actors, Satyam Rajesh as Komiri and Kamakshi Bhaskarla as Lakshmi, deliver standout performances that leave a lasting impact. Some of Lakshmi's dialogues are loaded and were penned well! Their portrayals are not just convincing; they are compelling and emotionally resonant as well.
The other cast members deserve recognition for their contributions. Baladitya as an upright police officer, Sahiti Dasari, Getup Sreenu, and Rakendu Mouli as a new Sub-inspector, have all delivered appropriate that are expected of the roles they played.
This movie is a cool cinematic experience. Expect the unexpected, as this film defies conventional storytelling and takes you on an unforgettable journey. It's not just a movie; it's an adventure that will keep you guessing and thoroughly entertained from start to finish.
Maa Oori Polimera (2021)
A Bona-fide suspense thriller!
I stumbled upon this movie by chance, and right from the beginning, it had me hooked. The narration was relentless, and I found myself gasping for air as the roller-coaster ride continued. While I've seen other reviews that claim the initial part of the movie is slow, I believe the director did a masterful job in establishing the characters. The challenge for the director was to delicately explore various themes of human behavior, both good and bad, right and wrong. While the movie explicitly delves into occult practices, I realized that the form and content of the film are quite different. It's actually a thriller cleverly disguised as a horror movie with mystical elements. The chosen theme is fraught with risk, and the audience might either embrace it or reject it entirely. In this regard, the movie can be described as bold. There were a few raw dialogues that I had to revisit to ensure that they were indeed spoken, but they were spoken, of course! In retrospect, the characters in the film closely mirror the behavior of real people we encounter in our daily lives.
What I appreciated most about this movie is that the director created pure art with no pretense. It's a sincere attempt to craft an authentic suspense thriller. Throughout the film, there are no lavish sets or unnatural acting by the actors. Instead, you only see the characters, making it a genuine storytelling experience that doesn't compromise anywhere. Many have called it "pure" or "raw" due to their perception.
I was particularly intrigued by the opening titles and what they meant. I got my answer when the movie concluded with the announcement of Part 2, which was a clever twist!
I also wondered about the inclusion of a couple of intimate scenes, which is uncommon in "Telugu" movies. I believe there are two reasons for this: first, it's an OTT platform, and the director has creative license to push boundaries; and second, it serves a more legitimate purpose in character development. One of these scenes paints a character as a lecher, naturally causing the audience to dislike such individuals subconsciously. The other scene involving the lead characters establishes that Komaraiah is a suspect, allowing the director the flexibility to shape his character in Part 2. It's a smart move!
Background Score:
Many might have missed how wonderful the background score is. It elevates tense scenes and brings joy to the interactions between Romaraiah and Jangaiah. I can confidently say that the movie's soul is captured by the underappreciated background score.
Photography and Art:
The cinematography captures precisely what needs to be captured, especially in the night scenes. The occult scenes are genuinely eerie, and the lighting creates an ambiance befitting a true occult setting.
Editing:
The editing is tight and perfectly complements the tense screenplay envisioned by the director.
Acting (Main Characters):
Satyam Rajesh: You'll appreciate this unassuming character who transitions into a menacing occult performer. His performance elicits a rollercoaster of emotions. It's a pleasant surprise to see a typically typecast comedian tackle such a complex character.
Bala Aditya: A charming character you can't help but love. His portrayal of a stuttering individual is endearing, showcasing a character with generosity, purpose, and unwavering commitment to his profession. It's heartwarming to witness such a role in the film.
Srinu: His natural acting is a perfect fit for the role.
Sahiti: A rustic beauty whose acting evokes sympathy. Her role, while somewhat limited, leaves room for her to showcase her acting talent.
Kamakshi: Her expressive eyes do the talking, and her body language is a joy to watch. I believe her role has ample space for emotions and drama in Part 2.
I commend the script for giving female characters room to shine and perform.
In conclusion, watch this movie to be blown away-a truly unadulterated thriller!
