Swiping America (2023)
Wtf is this?
Now I haven't watched every episode, and don't plan on it, but considering this is a "reality" show I feel I can write a review based off what I saw. This show is trash and is super annoying. Whoever is narrating this is cringe worthy and it's easy to see why all these people are still single. And this show wants to say it's diverse, when it doesn't even have a straight male. I understand that's not the target demographic of a show like this, but you'd probably get a handful of more viewers if there was a fifth person who was a straight male. Nothing else would have to change (except maybe the narration). You can't pass this off as dating in the modern age if you're going to completely leave out the second largest demographic out there.
47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019)
Probably one of the worst shark movies
As far as cinematic releases go, this has got to be one of the laziest, ill conceived, ridiculous shark movies made. It's is on par with a sci-fi channel (Sharknado) TV movie. The sad part is, the movie takes itself too seriously. Now I did not go into the movie thinking these sharks would act like real sharks. If that was the case then we wouldn't have a movie altogether (which probably would have been for the best). But the forced nature of the events that unfold, coupled with horrendous acting; make this almost an unwatchable film. A co-worker recommended this movie to me, saying that it was well made and surprisingly scary. I am here to tell you that is not true in the slightest.
The only reason why this movie gets a 2 instead of 1, is because the idea is some what unique. It's just terribly executed.
If my review could deter even one person from wasting the 90 some odd minutes it takes to wade through this movie, then the time spent writing this review will have been worth it.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Familiar, Yet Different Sequel to a Christmas Classic
I see a lot of reviews faulting this film for basically copying the original. Yes a lot of the beats are similar, but there is growth in the main character that seems natural. Kevin takes on even more responsibilities while trying to make his own way. In the first film Kevin is mainly a selfish child, who by the end of the film discovers he is not as helpless as other would believe. By the end of the sequel, Kevin looks beyond himself and takes responsibility to save Christmas for a bunch of orphans.
It was nice to see that growth in character, while also still being able to capture the magic of the original. Most of the original cast make a return, while introducing a couple of new eccentric characters. And Joe Pesci is still great. The setting is on a larger scale and the stakes are higher.
For me, I believe pairing Home Alone and Lost in New York together makes for a perfect way to spend a night in around the holidays.
Home Alone (1990)
Merry Xmas You Filthy Animals
This has got to be one of the best Christmas movies ever made. The story is simple yet unique. The acting is not academy award worthy, but Macaulay Cullkin has just enough charisma to carry the film, and of course Joe Pesci is great. Then you add John Williams score, and the whole thing gets elevated to another level. It has aged a little, but it is still enjoyable to watch today. If you're looking for a movie to put you in the holiday spirit, look no further than Home Alone.
The sequel is pretty good too. A lot of rehashing, but it's still a good companion piece.
Fringe (2008)
If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you do!!
It has been a long journey over the last five seasons, and a lot has happened. Inviting these characters into my home has been a treat, and now that it is finally all over, I feel compelled to let it be known how this show has effected me. The great thing about Fringe, is that it is a science fiction show, but you don't have to be a big scifi nerd to enjoy it. The show is filled with emotion, great acting, suspense, and smart writing. Among the crazy cases and story arcs, are running themes about family, the relationships between Fathers and Sons, finding purpose for ones life, and the struggle of power that comes with knowledge.
The writers do an excellent job connecting different story lines throughout the series, which helps lead to the amazing series finale where everything comes full circle. Now some people might be a bit disappointed, thinking not all of the questions had been answered. But those people do not understand what Fringe really is, this is not Lost, and there is little to no filler in this series.
I urge anyone who reads this review and has not fully gotten into this series to go back and watch it from the beginning. Stick with it all the way through to the end, and you will not be disappointed. I guarantee it!!
P.S. John Noble deserves an Emmy, give it to him already!!
