Bringing Down the House (2003)
The last great 90's movie
This movie is easy to review- genius on Steve Martin and Queen Latifa. Eugene levy too.
90's style, vibe- whatever you want to call it. This might be the very last 90's movie. All setups are meant for a laugh. Exposition, generally has that delightful 90s music. If it doesn't, slapstick. If it's not silly, it's dramatic. This whole premise is ridiculous. I know it. You know it. Most importantly, the makers and players knew it. THIS, is what makes this movie, lovely. Enjoyable is a good word to describe it. But I would like to give it its proper designation as "The Last 90's Movie." Enjoy, kids- the 90s had plenty more to offer.
Freaky (2020)
Violent, and hilarious!
Pretty great body swap movie- and a great combination of horror and typical high school/raunchy teen comedy. Vince Vaughn is hilarious and at times scary, depending on who he is at the time. The director, Christopher Landon has a real knack for this usually very difficult genre of horror comedy- he really is able to check all the important boxes for each genre without losing tempo. Highly recommended for those who enjoy the genre. One note- the death scenes are not for the squeamish. They are, at times absurd, but grounded, making them feel realistic. They are also very creative, graphic and at times, elaborate. So, you know, 'viewer discretion advise'...
Duplex (2003)
DeVito perfection/no spoilers
No synopsis here. I have adored Mr. devito's work since I was a young child. It wasn't until I grew emotionally into adulthood that I realized his genius. DeVito is able to craft, through his works, all stages of life. In 'Duplex' he completes a story that can be enjoyable for everyone. Children will laugh at the slapstick fart jokes, teens will snicker at the juvenile break ins and pranks, adults will smirk ( and admire, maybe,) at the possibility of taking your futures into your own (super high clapping) hands. Oh and the slapstick! However; this tale is not limited or setup for any one of these age groups. It maybe, certainly a tough sell for youngins (or marketability for the studios for that matter) , but for those in relationships or those looking at their first homes; this is a fun, dark, and delightful ride.
I do recommend this film. It is, in my opinion, a perfect dark comedy. Most laughs come from accident, argument, or anxious ambience(along with the aforementioned slapstick; and great performances by the three main stars) (side note: Ben Stiller has a streak of playing roles that keep him in constant disaster(ie museum/focker franchises/heartbreak etc)- this is his best performance)
Give it a shot, you may be among the great group of people who love this film! Recommend next, Death to Smoochie
Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (1996)
Take this with a grain of salt
When viewing this, viewers should keep in mind that the movie that is on the "screen," is there to be made fun of. Meaning that this whole concept is a joke and should be judged with that kind of mentality. Anyone who tries to watch this, and wants to be moved or driven into the type of emotion that a "great film" has the ability to do should not waste their time. But- any person who wishes to avoid reality and laugh at a movie that only attempts to be funny- then this is a good one.
