Distress Code 1201 (2017)
Not good.
I'm watching this now and it is bad. Bad make up, bad fx, and terran acting.
The Birth of a Nation (2016)
Powerful film that suffered from the backlash of the racist Hollywood system.
I will make this very brief. Nate Parker sacrificed everything to bring us this film. Just completing it was a momentous feat. The story is powerful and much needed. The only negative feedback that I have is that I felt it need more towards the third act. I think the film was re-edited for the theatrical release and may have take away from the impact and brutality of slavery. I would love to see the original director's cut. Nate Parker's acting was pretty strong and should be considered for an Oscar nod. But of course, he's going to be passed up.
Now back to the "system". Many people that I've spoken with believed that the film got purchased by Fox in an effort to sideline the potential message. The disappointing box office performance sealed the fate of the film. I do believe that it will perform much better on home video and Netflix. In closing, I cannot help to compare this film to "12 Years a Slave". In doing so, "Birth" falls short to the more seasoned Steve McQueen. Nonetheless, I still stand by the "8".
