Ink (2009)
Remarkably well executed
I have had this film in my queue for some time now, and my only regret is having not seen it sooner!
It is very difficult to sum up adequately or in simplistic terms, but contains a clever mix of thematic elements that make it a thoroughly enjoyable experience for fans of a variety of genres.
I cannot knowingly submit this without calling to attention how remarkably well it was executed as a whole, it felt like a fully realized vision, yet left me wanting more. There is a good foundation of world-building involved here, and many stories yet to be told...if only we could find a Storyteller nearby 😉
Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)
Beautiful visuals, but disappointing story
While I deeply enjoyed the first film, and being a fan of the books, I had high hopes for this sequel.
Visually the film is striking like it's predecessor, but that is what I found to be the ONLY redeeming quality of this particular film. The entire plot is so far disconnected as to not make any sense since there IS a second book from which to draw from, yet none of it was even used. Instead they opted for an original storyline, and I feel that is where they failed because the first film drew from the source material and expanded upon it...a formula that works. You can't go from that into the opposite and expect it to work. I saw that they blame Johnny Depp's divorce from Amber Heard as the reason for it's low attendance...never taking the possibility into account that the film simply sucked, they shot for the stars with this one, but missed the target entirely. Quite possibly the only Tim Burton connected film I didn't care for besides Big Eyes, but we don't talk about that 😂
Skeleton Key 3 Part 2 (2017)
One of my new favorites!
I was hooked from the opening song, being a fan of The Little Shop of Horrors and all. While I am a fan of independent films, I know that many movie viewers aren't, and to them, I implore you to look beyond the low budget aspect, and look at the individual characters, and the comedic efforts in the script, because both, in my mind, were extraordinarily well written and executed...you can't find this kind of genius in Hollywood studio films. I haven't laughed so hard in a while!!! I also believe special mention needs to be made for the Annimette character, because she was not just an awesome character, but was exceedingly well acted for the demands of the written character. Essentially ALL the characters were acted well for their roles, and I would recommend this film to anyone that enjoys bizarre comedies with interesting characters and twisted subtle humor. Absolutely a new favorite for me!
