Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (2008)
Dramatic fiction
This movie is interesting in that it's done very dramatically and is able to raise strong emotions. Good merits end there.
Bad merits of this piece of fiction comes from posing as a document. This "intelligent design" is not taught simply because it's not science in any sense of the word, and the makers seem to know it well. They had to come up with desperate conspiracies of some big science (first time I've heard such a term) and accusations of destroying freedom of speech in order to make it effective to the regular religious American viewer. If their "studies" don't get through scientific peer-reviewing and are not published in Nature, it's not because "big science" suppresses "freedom of speech", it's because their "studies" spell out FAIL! in huge orange letters that are self-illuminating All they ever do in the movie is make the theory of evolution look like root of all the evils ever done. It's pure fiction, dressed in a fancy whore-costume and sold as a documentary.
I don't recommend this movie to anyone, but if you absolutely must see it, then keep in mind that it's pure fiction with no roots in reality what so ever.
Silent Hill (2006)
Great movie of a Great game
I watched this movie first time with a faint fear in my heart, having played the original game many times on Playstation. I only knew that main protagonist had been changed from man to woman. What else did they change? Well, a lot of things, but that was certainly a good thing. I understood, that direct translation from game with multiple endings wouldn't have been possible.
Aside details, this game is most faithful to the game in surprising area: camera angles! There are a lot of scenes, where the view of the scene is taken 100% from the original game. Music is another. You have the same haunting music as in the game with few exceptions, and it's orchestrated this time.
Movie is scary, sad and extremely anxious. It doesn't have sudden scares. There is nothing that suddenly jumps or could jump on your face from darkness. It's scary, because the world in itself is a scary & weird place and there is no way out. Feeling of anxiety in the movie is phenomenal. You see the monsters from the distance but there is no way to keep running away from them forever. Behind everything that, there is just a sad story about a fate of a small girl.
Actors on this movie are good. Not great, but good. They are in a good balance, so that most of the main characters and in this case quite a few supporting characters too are very memorable. Expression on the face of the Kim Coates when he rescues Alessa from burning is terrific. No character is too generalized archetype either.
The only thing in this movie that monsters are way too visibly computer animated. I forgive that partially because, well, this is based on a video game.
Toys (1992)
One of the Worst movies I've ever seen
I didn't have any reservations about this movie prior to seeing it but one; Robin Williams. And as so often, my only fear about Williams turning his role to annoying quirk instead of something amazing was correct.
Then this movie has stereotypes. A lot of stereotypes. Let's see, this movie has: - Evil military-dude that destroys everything beautiful - A kind robot that wishes to be human - Good guy that everybody likes, even military-dudes employee - Children, oh innocent children that are in danger! - Funny dog - Good guys wear & gear round and colorful (pastel shades..) things, evil guys prefer shades of grey and square stuff
...and so on. You got the idea. This creates most of the annoyment in the movie, it has nothing original in it. As a matter of fact, this piece of film pushes boundaries to be less original than the original. If that is possible. Take the toy-factory: people on assembly line wear bright pastell-coloured clothing in a brightly coloured hall with funny-looking (and brightly coloured!) machinery. Atop of that, music is playing and they are dancing while working. Not only is it insanely gay, it is also poorly performed and set-up.
Plot is nothing new, and the moral of the story is terribly absent. Yes, there is no moral. instead, there is a message like in so many B-rate movies. In this case, it would tell something like "Technology is evil. It destroys our kids. And the world."
Im giving 2 stars; 1 because can't give less, 2nd for decent idea nevertheless. Well actually that's more like a complimentary.
