The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)
Boring
Why is this film supposed to be so great? Why on earth was it awarded with the Palme D'Or???
Coming from Ireland myself I was looking forward to learning something new about that period of time and see a gripping, well scripted and acted film. The outcome, however, was rather poor.
The performances ranged from average to absolutely appalling and everything else was pretty underwhelming, too. I was very disappointed with this film.
Don't waste your time with it, you might be better off reading some good literature about the Irish war of independence.
Marie Antoinette (2006)
Absolutely fantastic!
I finally got to see Marie Antoinette last week in Paris. My expectations were very high and I must say that I was not a bit disappointed. Everything is perfect. The acting... the costumes... the sets in Versailles. I especially loved Judy Davis' performance. Absolutely fantastic, one of the best supporting performances I have seen in a good while. Kirsten Dunst was very good, I cannot really see another actress in this role anymore. Marianne Faithful gave a good performance as Maria Theresa and Asia Argento was also great as the slutty Madame DuBarry. I could go on for hours about how much I loved this movie. Shame it's not going to be on in the UK until next year. Hopefully the DVD will come out in France later this year. Well done, Sofia!
Under the Big Top (2003)
A Great Erotic Masterpiece!
After a few months, I finally got my hands on this Kazan/Bjorn Co-Production and I must say it has been well worth the wait.
Being used to Kristen Bjorn's and Lucas Kazans high quality standards, I did not expect anything less than usual but I was really surprised when watching "Under The Big Top".
The first thing that will strike you is the higher than usual production values. The videography is absolutely stunning and the sets are done very well, too. The film seems to have been actually shot in a real circus tent.
The film is inspired by Ruggero Leoncavallos Opera "Pagliacci" and is - as I mentioned before - set in a circus, just like Pagliacci itself.
The film opens with a solo by Sergio Perini (solo as in singing!) and then goes right into the story.
All the actors are as beautiful as in every production associated with Kazan or Bjorn but a few deserve further mention: Antonio Armani, who proves that he is not only beautiful but athletically very talented, too. He definitely gives the best performance of his career so far. Max Orloff (more famously known as Pavel Novotny or Jan Dvorak) also has a great scene and proves again that he is a bona fide star.
You will also get great performances from well known performers like Vilem Cage and Ivan Andros.
All in all, this film deserves more than the title "Adult Film". Under The Big Top is one of the very few hardcore production which manages to maintain a very high standard of quality and good taste and even some culture.
This is definitely a great addition to the collection of an All-Male Erotica Connoisieur.
The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
Loved every second!
Fair enough, Supremacy IS different than Identity but is this a bad thing? I personally loved every second from the beginning to the end.
This is what I really want to see in the cinema. Good, fast-paced, action-packed entertainment with a great cast and great location shots.
Cannot wait for the DVD. Will be a great addition I will be watching over and over again.
Hopefully they will come up with an equally good or even better sequel to THE BOURNE SUPREMACY.
By the way, this is the first time I really ever enjoyed the performance of Joan Allen in a film. She was great.
The Village (2004)
Solid.
Well, I don't understand why everybody's going on about how they sussed out the plot within like five minutes into the movie. I didn't.... and I am glad I didn't, because I actually enjoyed the plot.
This is a different Shyamalan and I think people have a problem with that.
Bryce Howard was absolutely astonishing in her role as Ivy Walker. All the other cast was very good, too.
I enjoyed every second of this and thought it was great. Don't listen to all the senseless blabbering on here. Most people just form their opinion about what others say. Judging by how people can never shut up in the cinema, I believe that most people who didn't like this, simply didn't understand it or just "expected something different".
Message to those: go and see Exorcist:The Beginning or even Alien Vs Predator.
Gangsters at Large (1996)
Good performances, beautifully photographed.
This is one of Kristen Bjorn's best. With a bit of a story, good looking performers (especially Csaba Zsiros, who puts a lot of emotion and strength into his role) and Miami Beach as a beautiful backdrop, this is a very enjoyable film.
The mixture of men in this film is very cleverly selected, everything from Russian to South American is to be seen. This will please especially those who like a bit of variety in the adult genre.
Kristen Bjorn always proves that he is a top notch producer and director. It is a pity that he does not make more movies.
Highly recommended!
Three Brothers (1998)
This starring vehicle for the Rockland Brothers is GREAT!
Well, what can I say. When I saw this film in the video shop, I wasn't really sure whether it'd be worth it or not because the cover doesn't really look all that exciting and the praise hymns seemed a little over the top.
However, I decided to purchase "Three Brothers" because the price was reduced and... man, I can only say it was worth every pence!
The film is divided into four short stories, each involving at least one of the Rockland Brothers.
I will not go ahead and tell much about the stories, because I don't want to spoil them but in my opinion they were really watchable and the nice little twists at the endings were quite enjoyable and humorous.
Vince Rockland can actually really act, I would've never thought that. In his other movies, it never really showed but here it does. Hal and especially Shane (my favourite) are great in this, too. What a pity, the two are not making any movies anymore. A real loss to the industry.
Anyway, if you like gay adult movies give this one a try and you will not regret it! Great performances and some humour make this flick thoroughly enjoyable.
I am more than glad that I added it to my collection!!!
Troy (2004)
Yaaaaaawwwwwn!!!
I never fall asleep in the cinema. Today must have been the first time in YEARS that this has happened. And I had a good nights sleep when I woke up this morning. I don't know what it is, but something is just missing. The whole movie is just dire. It's too long and this howling singing in nearly every scene was just too much. Some of the dialogues were just laughable and is it only me, or is anyone else wondering why a Greek princess has a German accent? Everyone else managed a quite generic accent but she just couldn't do it and it stood out in a negative way. Ms Kruger should have tried harder or the accent coach they have hired was useless. No no no, after seeing this I just felt let down. Wait for 'The Day after Tomorrow' by fellow German director Emmerich and give this a pass. Seriously.
You've blown it again, Wolfgang.
Duplex (2003)
Why did this not become a total box office smash???
This film is one of the funniest, I have seen in a long long time. Funnier than "50 First Dates" and "Along Came Polly", DUPLEX should have done much better at the box office because it's really really funny. Eileen Essel as Mrs. Connolly is just hysterical. Go and rent or buy it on DVD!
