My Mother the Car (1965–1966)
5/10
Just like a mother, in a good and bad way.

Warning: Spoilers
Recently, I discovered this show while looking for old and lost media on YouTube. I found a playlist of episodes and dug in completely blind, and was surprised! The first episode isn't that strong compared to the others, but it tries it's best to establish the world of MMTC and why She's a Car. It's an interesting premise, and for an era full of science fiction (Bewitched, The adventures of Superman, I dream of Jeannie), it stood out. Ms. Ann Sothern as Gladys (The "mother") sounds a bit over the top sometimes, and the acting is a tad rough around the edges, though. One character named the great Mansini is the equivalent of a cartoon villain 99% of the time, and it breaks the immersion of the episode sometimes. David (the protagonist) is a well mannered man who just wants mansini off his back, but he just won't stop. No one else knows or believes Gladys is actually possessing the car, and this leads to Dave having regular spats with other characters, as well as the running gag where everyone says "Boy, you treat that thing like it's your own mother!". Dave's wife, Barbara, has a mother who doesn't like him, and is dead set on making Barbera leave Him, ruining everything when she arrives. I like the fact that there's playful banter between Dave and Barb, as it shows that even though they have ups and downs, they still love each other dearly. The cinematography was decent for the era, but in the playlist I found, it's a bit fuzzy. I love the music a lot! It really brings you into the good ol' days of the 60s, all while keeping up with the action going on onscreen. The special effects were great, especially when the show Gladys moving her headlights or running over Dave's foot and spanking him using her door in one episode. They always find some way to show then she's pretty much alive, and it was a very good use of the budget!

One question I've had, though, is how does Gladys work exactly? In one episode, she's fully autonomous and capable of directly speaking to people, but other times she's useless without someone turning the key in the ignition. Also, in an episode where they're going to a drive in, she hears one of her favorite actors is going to be there... and basically gets horny.

No joke.

How exactly does THAT work with the car? None of this is explained much in the show, other than a stupid antifreeze joke, and an episode where she gets amnesia from a fender bender.

Overall, this show is (ironically) just like a mother. She's a bit grouchy, dated, and rough around the edges at times, but she's also intriguing, fun, and witty enough to give you a laugh from time to time.

Now, if only if the show could make me cookies and milk...
