Don't Look Up (2021)
Savage satire, so depressing, brilliant
Brilliantly done by a deadly serious cast. Made me so angry. "She's crazy". "Change the conversation" the greed ...the final oops. Very very brave ending, almost never seen before.
Bravo guys, thanks for trying.
A History of Violence (2005)
Trash!
This film left me so speechless I have been moved to write a review and hopefully drag its rating down to its natural level (somewhere between 1 and 3). Where to start? The plot starts out being relatively well-founded but quickly peters out. There is a sub-plot involving the son, Jack, which is beyond pointless. The plot is full of holes such as where are the kids while the parents are getting hot and heavy in the middle of the day, how come having sex on the stairs is even viable after being shot in the chest, and so forth. The acting is, for the most part, good, but the direction is so off, the scenarios and imagery are laughingly heavy-handed, clichéd and plain bad. The two sex scenes looked like they could have been written for soft-porn movies but they are excruciatingly drawn out, to the point where I was embarrassed for the actors. They were completely passionless and I was left thinking "What was that all about?" However, those scenes were nowhere near as confusing as the full frontal from the leading lady (Maria Bello). It was so bizarre and distracting in its context that again, I just felt sorry for the actress. As with any modern film you think it is all going to come together at the end but in fact the final scene is beyond ridiculous in its bludgeoning triteness. I have to say I loved Lord of the Rings and really thought Mortensen would have great savvy in picking his next roles. Last week I had the misfortune of seeing him in Hidalgo and I thought THAT was bad. Well at least it had pretty horses in it.
Do Not watch this film, it will ruin your evening!!!!
Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005)
far batter than trailer
I saw the first movie and really enjoyed it a few years ago. i then saw the trailer was this sequel and I thought....what a derivative nothing new rethreading the old plot.
Well what can I say, the movie is nothing like the trailer.....totally different from the the first.
The film opens as if it first movie was 3 weeks ago, but unfortunately Gracie (SBs character) is recognised in a stakeout....from there she is offered a chance to be the FBIs face girl and she takes it. Now...growns emit from the audience with " re-telling MC 1, ugly ducking into a swan", but cleverly the film fast forwards 10 months to where Gracie has fully absorbed the role and appears on Regis and book signings and is totally transformed. All this happens in the first 20 minutes and the movie uses this as a launch pad....
funny funny lines and good fun... Enjoyed the line in the old peoples retirement home and asking if they had a euthuanasia program. Must say I enjoyed it.... not at all what the trailer advertised.
The Hebrew Hammer (2003)
The worst of Austin Powers and Steve Martin combined
This film is dreadful. It has absolutely zero laughs. Hebrew Hammer (Adam Goldberg) sets out to save Hannukah from Evil Santa (Andy Dick). Perhaps a promising enough basis for a plot, in actual fact the film does not progress beyond this premise. While there are some (far and few) nice touches and the plot is relatively coherent, it is laboured, hackneyed and ultimately, mindlessly boring. This despite the fact that Goldberg, Dick and Greer (Hammer's client/love interest) all have quite considerable screen presence. Despite being played for what might be described as whacky over-the-top gags, this film is consistently middle-class middle-of-the-road muck. DO NOT waste 85 minutes of your life on this. (note- the music was good..!)
The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
A superb but sadly underestimated comedy; slapstick animation at it's best
A superb but sadly underestimated comedy; slapstick animation at it's best. Certainly one of the funniest endings in cartoon history. Eartha Kitt is wonderful as the old bat who tries to ruin the splendidly spoilt Emperor/llama. Plenty of excellent incidental jokes to watch out for. Go rent it!
