The Bar (2017)
3/10
Good start, dreadful finish
6 March 2018
I don't write reviews often, but felt there was something to be said about this stylish, yet very dumb film.

The film orbits around a group of people trapped in a bar for completely outlandish reasons. The dialogue starts off well, even coming across as very organic. But very quickly the downward spiral begins: characters start making very idiotic decisions, and engage in increasingly cartoonish behaviour.

There is little else to be said other than the last hour of the film is quite annoying to watch. All conflict feels forced, the characters start to slot into stereotypes, and the jokes fall flatter.

I don't think I would watch this again. 3/10

This was terrible, and here's why you probably shouldn't watch it
5 May 2014
In the first few minutes of this movie, I was immediately hit by the first reason I want to bring up for not watching this movie:

1. The Acting - it's acceptable at times, but generally not convincing. The cops were terrible, as well as the older sister. The younger sister seems promising at first, but like the rest of the movie, fails at delivering anything interesting.

2. The Writing - as the story progressed, a few interesting events seemed to hint at inspired writing. However, this too fails to deliver.

And as many other people have pointed out in their reviews:

3. The Soundtrack - seriously, two notes? That's all you can come up with? It makes you feel like the story hasn't progressed, and constantly feels like the ending of some CSI special episode. In fact, the entire movie feels like that after the first 45 minutes.

4. The Conclusion - I was actually feeling like the movie couldn't get any worse, but those last 10 minutes really seal the deal.

Overall, a movie that could have been so much more with a little bit more work on the script and better casting. And actually hiring someone for the soundtrack.

A beautiful glimpse into Brazilian music
20 June 2011
This movie is mandatory for any samba, bossa-nova or general Brazilian music fan.

I did not know Baden Powell until I saw this film, and after viewing it I turned into a huge fan.

The songs played are beautiful pieces of Brazilian culture that I think everyone should enjoy.

Maria Bethânia also performs a few songs, and really pulls you into the feeling of each one. The relaxed background in some performance really allow you to feel like you're watching something few people get a chance to see: true artists recording and just hanging out in the backstage, or cafés.

Almost 40 years old, and still a great film.

Just terrible
25 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This film is terrible. The acting is horrible, the story is unbelievably predictable and the soundtrack is awful. The only good thing I have to say about this film is that the beginning scene with the huge machine is nice. The noises that machine made were pretty good. Nevertheless, one scene is not the "salvation" for this flick.

I was constantly disappointed by everyone's performance, and it just seemed like there was no point in watching this.

Oh, and the part with the digital Arnold didn't quite do it for me. It was just... bad.

Don't waste your money on this.
