The Batman (2022)
An Epic Super-noir Batman film! I loved it!
I do not know how to say it other than, wow.
I have a lot to say in this review, so if you don't wanna read a long review, then skip this one.
SPOILERS!
The film itself:
The Batman is a fantastic 3 hour super-noir detective story. The opening is fantastic, showing this version of Riddler's brutality. The cast was fantastic, the most surprising being Colin Farell as The Penguin. Everyone did a good job, from Robert Pattison as the Caped Crusader to John Turturro as crime boss Falcone. The action in it was very well shot and choreographed, mostly due to Matt Reeves and his team. The car chase sequence is easily the best sequence in this entire film. So simple, yet so effective. Also, the film's cinematography is BEAUTIFUL! The lighting of the city's lights in the rain turn to strong hot colors like Red, Orange and Yellow, to then transition to Cold colors of Blue and Grays. It was excellent. Also, the film's score is one of the best soundtracks in Cinema PERIOD! Micheal Giacchino really outdid himself for this film's score. The team did a fantastic job and I'm proud of them. This film's gripping and beautiful adaptation of Gotham is a wonder to see on the big screen. A perfect mix of realism and a mix of fantasy. Riddlers motivation was excellent, it dives into a side of Gotham we haven't really thought about. And also exposing Gothams true corruption, which was also intriguing. Right from the beginning the film hooks you in and leaves me (at least for me) satisfied and wanting more of this Batman. The film's plot line is excellently written, with perfect elements of Mystery and Superhero Action. This is a true Batman story. The world's greatest detective set into motion to help Gotham. My only problem for the plot (other than a few pacing problems) is for the final battle, there's no real big bad guy anymore. Penguin isn't really a big villain in this film, Falcone is dead, and Riddler is already arrested earlier in the film. So it feels like the film just added the Stadium sequences just to have a final battle, a really short one. Although, having an army of Riddlers was awesome. (Side note, was I the only one who thought Riddler's army were Redditors? Or is that just me? Idk) But I can forgive the weird structure of the final battle because of the beautiful ending this film gave to Batman. Speaking of which, let's dive into the main characters of this film. Batman is given an excellent arc in this film. From striking fear to everyone, being a symbol of Vengeance and Fear to being a symbol of Hope to the people of Gotham is beautiful and kinda made me emotional while on the drive home from the theater. The woman holding onto Batman in the ending of the film was touching, just subtle stuff like that really leaves a big mark on me. Bruce Wayne wasn't explored that much in the film though, but that's mostly because this film focuses more on BATMAN not BRUCE WAYNE, so it makes sense. Selina Kyle is hot- I mean, she was also very good in this film. I enjoyed her character, also believing she's like Batman, thinking she's a symbol of Vengeance. Can't wait to see her in future projects. The Riddler in this film was fantastic. Brooding and dark, but also funny. It's even funnier since Riddler is basically a Social Media influencer in this film. Paul Dano really gave Riddler his intimidation factor by his voice and the way he acts is disturbing. Even if Riddler looks like CallmeCarson (no disrespect to Paul Dano). Penguin was just a fun character. Funny, if a little cruel in this film. I was mostly surprised that Penguin was actually somewhat important to the plot, and the fact Colin Farell plays him. He did a great job, his make up and prosthetics are also great. Just, this film is one hell of a ride. Mystery, intrigue, heart and comic book fun. I loved this film, and I can easily say, this is THE BEST Batman movie ever! In my opinion at least, if you disagree, that's great! We all have different opinions. But for me, The Batman is a fantastic Batman and superhero movie. Matt Reeves, I'm sorry that I ever doubted you.
The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild (2022)
Buck Wild, definition of milking a dead franchise.
As a huge fan of the original Ice Age, it was sad to see this franchise go down hill. The final nail of the coffin was Collision Course, but now, with Disney buying Fox, Disney made this garbage. I did not have high expectations, but still watched it because "how bad could it be?" Well, it was AWFUL. Firstly, the animation is hideous. I get that the animators probably tried with the small budget (maybe) but, the movements and background were really bad. The main characters are dull and generic, the comedy is very cringy. For an example, at the beginning, Crash and Eddie do this very cringy montage of wearing rich clothes and doing dances or something (I mostly forgot and don't wanna look back at the dumpster fire of this movie) Simon Pegg gives a very soulless performance as Buck in this movie, he just sounds tired and done with this franchise (no hate to Simon Pegg). Also the villain (yes there is a villain) is garbage, don't know how else to say it, he just sucks. And I can go on and on, just, don't watch this movie. It'll be the worst 82 minutes of you're life. And I watched Collision Course, twice. (Sorry if this review is poorly constructed, I just, can't waste much longer writing this review on this garbage movie)
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
No Way Home managed to do the impossible.
Spider-Man: No Way Home, where do I begin. This big adventure with Spider-Man offers emotions, heart, humor and great fan service. Thats for the people who Haven't seen the movie. Now for spoilers.
SPOILERS!!
Spider-Man: No way home, in my opinion, is fan service done right. Firstly, lets talk about the villains. Sandman and the Lizard were useless, but, I would be lying if I didn't enjoy their banter with the other villains in the movie. Surprisingly, Electro was a massive improvement over TASM 2, he seems like a guy I can be friends with tbh. Other then the electric powers and being evil thing. Alfred Molina's Doc Ock was great in this movie, And I love how he's a hero in the end. That was a theory I had while watching the trailers and I was so happy when he did become a hero in the end (even if it was a short amount of time). But the best villain is hands down, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin. Green Goblin was amazing in this movie, Willem Dafoe's performance really enhanced this character in the movie, Green Goblin also was actually intimidating in the film. When Tom's Peter kept punching Norman, and he just laughs maniacally, chills down my spine. Alright, enough with the villains, lets get into the really good stuff. TOBEY AND ANDREW ARE HERE!! And it isn't a "Hey, remember that guy?" Type thing, the movie actually develops them after they're films. Mostly Andrew (that redemption scene was amazing btw) and Tobey even had a bit of redemption when saving Norman from being killed by Tom's Peter with his glider. (It was also a nice callback in a way from Spider-Man 2002) and hearing that Tobey's Peter made it work with his MJ after the events of Spider-Man 3 just made me very happy. And seeing the 3 Spider-men working together at the end made my inner child scream out of excitement in the theater. This film not only made me smile, it also made me tear up a bit, from Aunt May's death to Andrew saving MJ, it was to good. I haven't teared up while watching a movie since I saw Endgame in 2019. And the callbacks and references to previous movies just made me grin in the theater. Most notably the "I'm something of a scientist myself" line. Heck, even the Action was better from the previous 2 MCU Spider-Man movies. It was fast paced, fun, and seeing each villain using their powers in each battle was great. (My favorite ones were the Doctor Strange fight and the apartment fight). And Peter Parker, he does make a dumb choice by letting the villains go into Happy's Apartment, but he did it because he wanted to save them. Thats something Peter would probably do tbh. Tom's Peter Parker suffers real consequences in this movie, The second Aunt May dies, the film goes from lighthearted and fun, to dark and sinister. And the ending, holy crap, that has to be one of the most saddest endings I've ever seen. Tom's Peter literally has nothing now. Just Spider-Man. No MJ, no Ned, no May, just, Spider-Man. All of that, just to prevent the Multiverse from breaking. And that scene where Tom's Peter goes to MJ after the spell and sees the band-aid on her forehead, and decides not to make her remember, that made me tear up a bit. THATS GOOD DRAMA FOR THE POSSIBLE NEXT SPIDER-MAN TRILOGY (I mean as of editing this review, it has made 1.7 billion dollars. So its highly Sony and Marvel are gonna make another movie). Man, this movie is such a wild ride. A roller-coaster of emotions, comedy and heart. Now, this movie isn't perfect. Especially to people who haven't seen the other Spider-Man movies or grew up with them, and the plot-line is very messy and there are tons of plot holes. But in the end, as A Spider-Man fan who watched all of the Spider-Man movies since I was a kid, this movie is fantastic. It may just be fan service, but it was some damn good fan service. Thank you Marvel and Sony for the greatest Christmas gift I could have ever asked for. I will forever cherish this trilogy. Have a good 2022 ya'll.
