FUBAR (2023)
Great show
Genuine treat to see Arnie back, and playing loveable comedy Arnie too. I found it uplifting to see that he's still got it. It's also a funny show, with a few actual laughs and a whole bunch of almost chuckles. Probably get cancelled cos a bunch of people review bombed it after half an episode, but still, good show while it lasted!
I too thought it would be the middle of the road lukewarm comedy that all the neg reviews are saying it is, but it wasn't. It had a narrative that was unpredictable enough to remain entertaining throughout, much edgier humour than I expected, often times quite bizarre and unique to itself, and all the characters were likeable and each had plenty of development. I'd describe it as a "feel good show", just a fun quirky half hour of escapism, like sitcoms used to be in the 90s. It's not trying to be anything greater than that.
Definitely has potential to be one of those shows that improves with time, with bigger budget, etc. But that was a solid first season imo.
Spiderhead (2022)
Loved that movie! Underrated.
It was bound to get heat just for being a Netflix film. Or for having imperfect main characters who have committed crimes. I personally thought it was excellent. It was smart, well made and engaging. Would be a great Black Mirror episode. I thought it might go downhill in the third act, once everything was revealed, but I actually thought the ending was pretty awesome.
Great concept and great performances all round. Hemsworth was fantastic.
It's definitely not deserving of some of the reviews it's getting! People are pretty spoiled these days with the amount of entertainment on offer from streaming services, seems like complaining and finding faults in everything offers more entertainment for some people. Used to be you'd go rent a weird random video and find a way to enjoy it cos you spent the money and made the trip!
8/10. Pleasantly surprised. I think we're lucky that we get weird little gems like this with our favourite actors randomly popping up in our living room. Solid biscuit video day movie.
The Man Who Fell to Earth (2022)
Absolutely great show so far. Chiwetel Ejiofor is fantastic
This is good stuff. Well directed, well acted, great cast, (absolutely inspired choice for Bowie's role imo). I'm hooked already. People are so negative these days that I'm sure the show's future is immediately in jeopardy, but some of the negative reviews reveal more about the particular chip on the shoulder of the reviewer than the actual quality of the show.
The story has a lot of potential and the titular character is so well written and endearing and hilarious that I'm positive the show is in good hands. I can't imagine anyone but Chiwetel pulling it off tbh, he's so fun to watch. Love him in this.
If you were on the fence all I'm saying is give it a chance, made me smile a few times and that's all you need innit. I'm on board for the ride anyway.
Nice little weekly story that beats staring at a wall! Entertaining with plenty of mystery and a wonderful comedy element. I really hope it doesn't get cancelled.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (2021)
Absolute blast from start to finish
What a game. I had absolutely no interest during the run up as the trailers didn't make it look like much, (and the Avengers game went down as one of those epic gaming disasters). But every minute of this game was just pure fun.
I've never played a game where the characters just banter constantly every minute that you play! I'm sure there was never more than 30 seconds where there wasn't dialogue, even when you're just making your way through the levels. And the dialogue/writing is exceptional, I laughed out loud a whole bunch of times.
If you're into games for their stories and love you some comic book action then you just can't get better than this. The narrative is top tier, best I've seen in a comic book game. This version of the Guardians are actually more likeable than their movie counterparts too, imo. And I say that as a huge fan.
Graphics are gorgeous, really detailed, imaginative environments and the facial animation is some of the best I've ever seen in real time gameplay. It really helps to sell the performances and the humour.
Definitely don't sleep on this one. One of the most entertaining games I've ever played. Just stole GOTY for me.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
It's getting review bombed
It's just a bandwagon at this point because in no way is this a 1/10. It's like people have forgotten what genres are or something. This is a movie about a gremlin on a plane in WW2, with a couple of twists thrown in. It isn't Shawshank Redemption. It's primary concern is making a bat**** crazy movie. And it absolutely succeeds. The reveal, dialogue, acting and pacing during the turret section was fantastically done and was a worthy homage to the Twilight Zone episode that inspired it. The people checking their watch during that section had already made up their mind to complain about it once the movie was done, the payoff afterwards was that the movie packs all it's crazy into the final section and the results are hysterical. It's intentional, just a whacky film. You're supposed to turn off your critical mind and have fun. Definitely check it out if you don't automatically hate everything and you're totally cool with movie physics. Loved it.
