For All Mankind: He Built the Saturn V (2019)
Balance is key
The writers tackled the complexities of Wernher von Braun's character with nuance. The show was able to balance the two extremities of his career: the important role he played in science, and his involvement in the atrocities of the Third Reich.
For All Mankind: Red Moon (2019)
Out for launch
Putting two iconic astronauts in peril for its pilot episode was a bold move that paid off handsomely. The use of modified library footage to contextualize the politics of Nixon's America is utilized to great effect. Aleida's subplot feels tacked on to force an immigration angle into the story.
Oprah's Book Club: Ta-Nehisi Coates: The Water Dancer (2019)
Know your own book
Ta-Nehisi didn't come prepared. There are questions very specific to his story that he didn't quite answer. I felt like he was making them up as he goes. You can clearly see Oprah and a few audience members being confused at some of the things he said. I appreciate how Oprah related the book's story to the current issues society is facing. The footage of Monticello provided a good backdrop to remind people of what once was.
