Invasion: First Day (2021)
A finale episode that shows how to save money on special effects
To save a ton of money the show skips the entire alien battle involving nuclear missiles. Instead it gives us characters that give boring speeches along with incredibly long pauses. The big "surprise" is that it appears the aliens are still alive based on the final seconds of the episode. The bad news, get ready for more boring speeches, long pauses and minimal special effects as the producers discover new ways to save money and screw the viewer.
Invasion: Home Invasion (2021)
Invasion of the spiky balls
Well, a least we finally got some action this episode. But, it was hard to see the spiky balls and I am still mystified how a spiky ball attacked the husband for quite a while and he was not severely injured. Apparently the creatures either kill you with a single spike attack or they play around with you off camera until they've had enough fun. Is it too much to ask to have the spiky balls be consistently deadly?!?
Invasion: Full of Stars (2021)
Watch out for the spiky balls!
Those spiky balls roll around and send a spike through when you are close enough. Except if you are a boy who can share his mind with the alien. If that happens then the aliens stop moving completely for hours and then plops down on the floor dead. They should call this episode spiky balls vs the emo kid's brain.
PEN15: Home (2021)
A powerful episode with a happy ending
I really despised Maya's boyfriend. He treated her poorly from the start and Maya endured it because her self-esteem has been beaten down by one potential boyfriend after another. This boyfriend doesn't even have any redeeming qualities --- he's rude, insensitive, selfish, unfunny and treats Maya poorly. But, Maya is so desperate for someone to show her any kind of affection that she puts up with his abusive behavior. When he broke up with her, he did it in such a way as to traumatize her with a song that would always remind her of the harsh breakup.
This was sad to watch especially since I was rooting for Maya to be happy at least in the final episode of this season. Well, as the episode continues I got my wish. Not only did her brother and friends stick up for her by egging (actually "squiding") the jerk's house, but Maya got her first kiss. And that kiss wasn't just from anyone, but from a kind gentle and attractive boy (he's been on the show from the very start) who was even sweet enough to ask for permission before kissing her. The truly beautiful part was that he told her to think of that kiss whenever she heard the song that jerk traumatized her with. He basically replaced a horrible memory with a beautiful one. For that powerful moment, I say "bravo" to this show.
There were many good moments in this season 2 finale, but I just wanted to share my favorite.
PEN15: Yuki (2021)
A great episode that shows there is more to Yuki than we ever knew
This was such a beautiful episode! It showed a different side of Maya's mother (who is played by Maya's real life mother). First it showed how good the mother is as an actress and it showed a different side of Yuiki's personality. It shows that there is more to Yuki than just being a devoted mother and wife. She was also hiding an unresolved pain that she tried to leave behind when she moved from Japan to America.
That unresolved pain suddenly came back when she spots her son's father in the grocery store. He is back from Japan, but will only be in town for one more day. He has a desire to reconcile things with Yuki in a way that she's not comfortable with (and can't because she loves her American husband). But, she takes the time to make him understand why she left for America and how she still wants him to be a part of her son's life.
It is a wonderful episode that is quite different from the other episodes of pen15. It still has plenty of humor especially when Yuki continues to pretend she is handicapped throughout the episode. It is directed by Maya Erskine and Maya was quite impressed by her mother's acting skills.
PEN15: Luminaria (2021)
Easily the worst episode of the season
I have no problems with an episode that focuses on grief and cancer. But, this episode is just lame. You have two kids that trick Maya and Anna into giving one of them a kiss on the cheek. That is HALF of the episode right there. Then you have one of the kid's sister freak out because Maya and Anna doubted for a second that his cancer was real even though their explanation for their doubt made total sense. The sister acted like Maya and Anna blew up a hospital or something. Talk about overreacting and overacting too.
The problem is that this episode was written by the actress who plays Anna and she wrote it shortly after her father died of cancer. I think she was in too much grief to write a good story. The moral should be if you are too close to the subject matter, get someone else to write the story for you.
Lost in Space: Final Transmission (2021)
As Thanos said, you should have gone for the head
SAR went for Will's heart and even then he only damaged it slightly. If he had gone for Will's head, the brain matter could not have been repaired even with their latest technology. With all the fighting that SAR has already done I'm surprised he was too stupid to not know the "go for the head" rule.
Lost in Space: Three Little Birds (2021)
What is the robot doing all day?
The only thing the robot did this episode was to carry a bunch of rocks and throw them into a lake to hide them. This was actually hurting their progress from getting off the planet. The robot should have more important functions rather than waiting for Will to pass gas so it can analyze the particles... a job I certainly would not take!
Lost in Space: Trust (2021)
Overall a great ending to the series!
Yes, there are some far-fetched plots such as the whole thing with the robot telling Will to "trust" him which somehow meant I am going to disintegrate and become part of your heart, then SAR will stab you again and I will then take over his body so I can come back in my original robot form. But, the family values, cute banter between the family members (which Judy says includes Don), great special effects and creative ideas more than make up for the shows fault. Many of the plot twists are handled quite well so don't fret over a couple that aren't as good as they could be.
I was emotional during several episodes partly because some of the family scenes are so sweet, partly because of the amazing special effects and partly because I just wished there was more wholesome entertaining sci-fi like this. You may find a few details that don't add up or aren't explained well (especially how Dr. Smith escaped death in last season's finale), but try to find better sci-fi shows out there and you'll find there are little to none.
PEN15: Shadow (2021)
Maya's shadow sees more than she should have
Ume catches Maya masturbating in the restroom. She is totally naked which adds to Ume's confusion. Being caught makes Maya very paranoid that Ume may have understood that Maya was playing with herself. This lead to a lot of hurt feelings, paranoia and confusion. Fortunately, they made up as friends as Maya lies that she fell in the restroom and was naked because it was hot. Ume was still confused by this until Maya just admitted "I'm weird". The adorable Ume simply said 'um. Me too" and from that point forward they were back to being friends.
It just goes to show that little honest can go a long way. But, don't be too honest because obviously Ume is way too young to know what masturbating is. Maybe one day Ume will return at an older age and her and Maya can swap stories about the best way to reach orgasm.
