It Came from Somewhere (2022)
This has Everything that was great about 50's sci fi
I'm a huge MST3K fan. I love watching old B-movies, love Svengoolie...all of it. It Came From Somewhere is so well done that if I hadn't known it was only made this year I would have believed I actually was watching an old movie. Everything about it, from the classic drive-in ads at the beginning to the "expert" (who kind of reminds me of the guy at the beginning of the old Inner Sanctum movies), to the campy special effects just had that 50s feel. Even the way the actors spoke. That just shows me how talented and dedicated the entire cast and crew were. While this isn't a comedy, I will admit that I did chuckle in a few places, just because some scene was so perfectly spot-on with the movies this paid homage to. It Came From Somewhere truly is everything that is great about 50s sci fi movies.
Trepidity (2022)
Urban legend with 80s flare
As always, Acrostar Films really delivered. With enough blood to satisfy Dracula, Trepidity joins the ranks of classic 80s horror. Loved the premise, including the beginning (from the 70s). From the onset, the creep factor was high, with an excellent urban legend, a sinister location, and characters both likable and not so much. The characters themselves were so accurate to the era and to that particular horror movie subgenre. Their clothes evoked a certain nostalgia for those of us who remember the 80s, and their mannerisms. As for their attitudes, I will admit to a bit of sadistic pleasure in watching the too-stupid-to-live teens meet their comeuppance.
Blood Sisters: The Parent Syndrome (2022)
Another great episode!
For funny moments and heart this episode is wonderful. I truly felt Vangelica's continuing pain at Mia's disappearance. And the sister-moment between Ashley and Miranda was beautiful. Of course, the humor, the teasing, and snark were on point as well. Loved how that typical "parental meeting" scenario was made all the more awkward and weird because one set of parents was Vampire.
Blood Sisters: The Great Sister Prank Off (2022)
These just keep getting better
I love this series, and the April Fools episode did not disappoint. I love the dynamic between the sisters, and adding Mia to the mix gives an even better balance for Vangelica as she occasionally seemed outnumbered by her older sisters. This April Fools episode literally pits Mia and Vangelica against Miranda and Ashley in a prank-off. A hilarious set of practical jokes ensues as each team vies to win.
This episode also features a bit of fun when the sisters' parents decide to enjoy a picnic. I absolutely loved their scenes and laughed out loud several times. I'm hoping to see much more of these two in episodes to come.
While I love the snarky sibling rivalry between Miranda and Ashley, I'm beginning to adore what's growing between Mia and Vangelica.
Can't wait to see what happens next in this family!!
Blood Sisters (2021)
Who's on the menu this holiday?
Watching Blood Sisters was like listening to my own siblings during family dinners. Except these sisters are vampires. The arguments, the teasing, each sibling with their own unique quirks. Of course, their Christmas feast isn't ham or turkey. Seriously, I loved watching this episode. It was clever, the dialogue snarky and so natural. The chemistry between all three sisters felt so real. Highly entertaining, and I absolutely loved the ending! I can't wait until the next episode is released!
The Doll (2021)
A movie that'll make you rethink getting your child a doll
The Doll might not be as blatant as movies like Chucky or Annabelle, but it is no less creepy, no less compelling for its short length. To be honest, I found the fact that the movie took place in a park on a bright sunny day to ramp up the creepy factor significantly. Because you don't expect anything to happen on such a day. The voice of the doll was brilliant. With that hint of the mechanical to keep it from sounding too human, yet also so bubbly and happy. The sort of voice any child would love to hear from a new favorite doll. I just loved all the performances, and the whole movie from beginning to end.
In the Dark (2021)
Excellent psychological horror
I'm not a huge fan of horror movies, but the look into Jessie's psyche was compelling. Forced to face her worst fear, Jessie also confronts some of those who have had the most influence on her life. Each scene was so real it drew me in, making me feel some of The terror, heartbreak, self-recrimination, and confusion Jessie was feeling. Very well done.
